Today was a great day as we officially handed over the WASH project funded by Operakällaren Foundation (OKF) and the Swedish Radio Appeal Board (Radiohjälpen SRAB) of Sweden at Gidamula village in Hanang District.

WaterAid Tanzania, in close collaboration with the government, , through this project, have reached 2,440 people in Gidamula village and the nearby villages with access to:
💧 Water supply system, which includes a community water distribution point that is climate-resilient, a solar-powered pump, a storage tank, and a rainwater harvesting system.
🚽 Climate resilient, gender sensitive and inclusive toilets for girls and boys’ students and teachers. With an adjacent burning chamber for menstrual hygiene management (MHH) linked with the MHH room in the girls’ toilet.
👋🏾 Mass handwashing facility
🚰 Installed water filters for drinking water.

🩸 Today, we also marked , themed “Together for a Period-Friendly World.”

The project was officiated by the Guest of Honour, Marco Semindu, District Commissioner of Mbulu, on behalf of Regional Commissioner Manyara, Hon Queen Cuthbert Sindiga,

The toilets handed over today are not just bricks and cement; they are a statement that the girls of Gidamula primary school have the right to learn with dignity, safe hygiene, and live with confidence, and without the burden of shame.

🤝 Today, we officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) - , formalizing a partnership with an institution whose mandate to safeguard Tanzania’s environment is both vital and deeply aligned with our own mission at WaterAid Tanzania.

💬 As our Country Director, Anna Mzinga, said at today’s signing -
“Achieving sustainable WASH delivery demands more than infrastructure. It depends on the natural resources and environmental standards that NEMC exists to safeguard. And that is precisely why this partnership matters.”

💧 Safe water doesn’t exist without a protected environment. Clean rivers, well-managed ecosystems, and climate-resilient water resources are the backbone of every tap, every borehole, every handwashing station and sanitation facilities we build. And NEMC exists to protect exactly that for 40 years now, while WaterAid Tanzania has also spent 43 years turning that protection into life-changing WASH services for communities across Tanzania.

Both parties have a common value, clean and safe water is important and their critical role in wanting to ensure a better environment in the community.

💪🏾 With both organisations’ 4 decades of existence making change in Tanzania, this serves as an important milestone where together they commit to joint planning, technical collaboration, knowledge sharing, and WASH programmes that actively reduce the impacts of climate change.

Today, WaterAid Tanzania joined partner .tanzania at the , themed “Mkunga Mkono Uokoao”, marking a powerful moment ahead of International Day of the Midwife 2026.

👏The highlight of the day? Dr Seif Shekalaghe, the Permanent Secretary from the Ministry of Health, visited our booth and signed in support of the “Time to Deliver” campaign, demonstrating a strong commitment to advancing maternal and newborn health. Our response to his ask for a recommendation on strengthening the health sector was simple: the need for increased WASH financing in healthcare facilities, both for building and improving essential services like water, toilets, and handwashing stations, and for keeping them working every day through maintenance, water supply, cleaning, and supplies.

🏥 Midwives from Mnazi Mmoja Hospital, Kigamboni Healthcare Facility and Kurasini Dispensary reached through WaterAid Tanzania’s WASH interventions funded by DP World took the floor and shared powerful testimonies on how clean water, decent toilets and hygiene are changing care for mothers, newborns and healthcare providers alike.

📣 What a moment of collective effort as Midwives rallied with posters, amplifying the call for urgent investment in midwifery and improved quality of care for women and newborns.

Recently, WAT team joined Kurasini Health Care Facility and Community Health Workers (CHW) at Shimo La Udongo street in Kurasini Ward. CHWs took lead enriching 81 community members with hygiene practices while healthcare providers delivered essential health services such as child immunization and health screening.

🗣️ What stood out? The community taking a step to raise and address pressing health concerns. This is what change looks like, not top-down, but rather side by side and for a sustainable healthy community and livelihood.

🧐 What hygiene practice do you think communities need to hear more about? Tell us below!

Ahead of , WaterAid Tanzania joined partner .tanzania visiting Kigamboni Healthcare Facility for a learning and exchange visit where they witnessed first-hand how improved WASH services implemented by WaterAid Tanzania, funded by DP World, improve maternal and newborn care.

The evidence is clear: investing just $1 per person in clean water, toilets and handwashing could prevent 10 million cases of maternal sepsis and cut maternal and newborn deaths in half.

At Kigamboni, that investment is already making a difference, from expanded water storage and upgraded labour wards to climate-resilient toilets and clean drinking water around the clock.

“This project is part of a revolution improving the health of our healthcare providers and the entire Kigamboni community.” - Kigamboni health team.

🤝 Together, we signed the Time to Deliver petition 📝 raising the voice for every woman demanding safe birth by calling on governments to Finance WASH for Women.

Because when we show up for each other, mothers live, newborns thrive, and communities flourish.
