FOREWORD
Tanzania is vulnerable to repeated natural and man accelerated disasters. Accidents, infrastructure failures and natural hazards are causing loss of life, i

njuries, illness, property damage, loss of livelihoods and services, social and economic disruption, and shifts in agricultural productivity and declining, environmental degradation and food insecurity. This is due to weaknesses in prevention and disaster mitigation strategies, preparedness, Risk assessment, emergency responsive capacity and sustainable recovery options, lack of access to technology and skills within ministries, departments and agencies. These challenges require well organized, multi-sector emergency early warning and preparation systems. ABOUT US
Tanzania Environmental and Disaster Management Organization (TEDMO) is a non- governmental and non-profit organization with registration number 00NGO/00006840.It was registered under the Non Governmental organization Act of 2002 to conduct its activities in The United Republic of Tanzania. TEDMO is committed to conduct Risk assessment, reduce poverty among communities, ensure environmental sustainability and address specific disaster underlying factors so as to have comprehensive and well integrated disaster risk management that aims to avoid, lessen or transfer the adverse effects of hazards through activities and measures for Pro-active measures (that is prevention, mitigation and preparedness)

The organization understands that sustainable development will not be achieved unless Risk Assessments are conducted, disaster management initiatives and strategies are integrated with community development plans, communities have the capacity to absorb and cope with different hazards, and ability to adapt to the challenges brought by hazards and disasters. Thus; TEDMO is responsible in narrowing down the knowledge gap patterning with Risk management, disaster management frameworks among local communities and other stakeholders by sharing experiences, skills and responsibilities. WHAT WE DO
1. We conduct risk assessment and risk knowledge dissemination, enhance community’s disaster preparedness and disaster mitigation measures, information sharing, education, resource mobilization, training and provision of early warning.
2. Conduct hazards and resources mapping and other disaster mitigation measures and activities that are pivotal to hazards and disasters prevention and reduction of potential impacts.
3. Promote and incorporate indigenous knowledge into the modern and advanced disaster management systems with the understanding that local communities have rich, diverse and culturally rooted indigenous knowledge on disaster management.
4. Develop mechanisms that enable provision of quick and sufficient aid which consider the needs of persons in need during disaster and emergency situation.
5. Promote sustainable recovery process with a wider view of recovery as the development process that incorporates reduction of risks of the same or other future hazards and disasters.
6. Participate in Advocacy, conservation, and preservation of environmental resources and we consider these resources as the principal provider of environmental services that facilitates hazard and disaster risk reduction.
7. Develop gender sensitive disaster reduction and relief services from the fact that, disaster affect men and women disproportionally.
8. Address climate change issues which are drivers of natural hazards and disasters through development of local solutions that solve global problems.
9. Address Poverty which is the main disaster risk underlying factor in Tanzania.
10. Carryout Environmental impact assessment which is a proved tool that provides evidence and analysis of environmental impacts of activities from conception to decision-making. Environmental impact assessments includes detailed risk assessments and provide alternatives, solutions or options to deal with identified problems.
11. Conduct researches that help in identifying, analyzing and addressing problems facing communities in all aspect of life.
12. Integrate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Development initiatives and disaster management schemes so as to mitigate potential hazard risks more sufficiently
13. Plan for livelihood and sustainability strategies that help in building resilient communities in aspects of water and sanitation, Public health, education and Poverty reduction initiatives.
14. Plan and implement various sustainable strategies in Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) and Forest Resources Management (FRM)
15. Conduct land use planning, surveys and Evaluation Activities
16. Conduct Monitoring and Evaluation activities on various projects
17. Identification and development of various programs and projects that will create a platform for developing youth’s carriers and professionalism.
18. Work independently or with other available domestic and international agencies in serving social groups such as the refugees within the country
19. Address issues patterning with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)

TARGET
TEDMO’s target is to:

1. Enhance Disaster preparedness and mitigation measures (Disaster Pro-active measures) at all levels in the communities through risk assessment and management knowledge, resource mobilization, training and development of frameworks for the successful implementation.
2. Identify and develop scientific and systematic systems within the communities that will help to identify potential hazards, risks and vulnerable people in the United Republic of Tanzania in order to strengthen communities’ capacities, and enhance mitigation measures to prevent or reduce hazards and disasters from happening or facilitate their ability to absorb and cope with hazards and disasters.
3. Provide humanitarian and relief services to disaster stricken communities and individuals reduce their sufferings and promote human dignity at all times
4. Promote and develop sustainable recovery process (Both structured and non-structured) that harnesses preventive recovery processes and sustainable livelihoods mechanism.
5. Promote and build communities’ capacity in fighting poverty, diseases and illiteracy. TEDMO’S STAFF
Our organization has more than 30 competent staff who are proficiently qualified with extensive expertise in Risk assessments, Research, Disaster management, Consulting services, gender issues, conducting Trainings, Risk and emergency management, social vulnerability assessment, Resource and hazard mapping, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Auditing, community development, Project Monitoring and Evaluation, Public health, Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM), Environmental conservation and management as well as Information and Communication Technology.
