Did you know? The main reasons girls in Tanzania miss school during menstruation include pain and discomfort (74%), lack of menstrual materials (42%), fear of embarrassment from visible stains (34%), lack of changing rooms (34%), and lack of clean and suitable toilet facilities (26%).

This data reminds us that menstruation is not just a private issue. It affects girls’ education, confidence, dignity, and ability to participate fully in school and community life.

That is why we are building Msichana Juu, a movement for menstrual justice that will challenge stigma, strengthen body literacy, and create supportive systems for girls and young women.

GIRLS BELONG IN SCHOOL.

When a girl stays in school, she is more likely to grow in confidence, build knowledge, delay early risks, and shape her own future. But too many girls in Tanzania are still being pushed out. UNICEF says 3.2 million children aged 7–17 are out of school in Tanzania, and rural and poor girls are among the most affected, with dropout increasing from around age 12 due to barriers like menstruation, child marriage, and weak support systems.

When girls leave school, they face greater risk of early marriage, unintended pregnancy, economic dependence, and exclusion from opportunities that could change their lives. UNESCO notes that in Tanzania girls often drop out during the transition to secondary school because of adolescent pregnancy, early marriage, lack of family support, and unconducive learning environments.

Keeping girls in school is not just about education. It is about dignity, protection, leadership, and justice.
Let girls learn. Let girls lead. Let girls stay in school.

Menstruation is natural, but for too many girls in Tanzania it is still shaped by silence, shame, stigma, and limited support. Too many girls miss school, struggle to manage their periods with dignity, and grow up without the information, confidence, and safe spaces they need.

That is why WOYOMO, in partnership with Kesho Yetu Initiative (KEY), is building the Msichana Juu Movement — a collective movement for menstrual justice in Tanzania.

We are inviting youth-led nonprofits, grassroots organizations, and community-based groups to join us in building a movement.

If your organization is working on menstrual justice or is interested in this work — we invite you to join us.

Powering change with WGNRR Africa!

Through the YouLead Social Action Project, we are breaking silence, challenging harmful norms, and centering the voices of adolescents and young people, especially girls and young women.

Together, we are building bold, safe spaces where they can access accurate sexual and reproductive health information, claim essential services, and make informed choices about their bodies and futures.

This is what solidarity looks like: shifting power, expanding choice, and standing for dignity, agency, and the right of every young person to thrive, on their own terms. ✊🏽

We have proudly participated in the official launch of the Jamii Salama Initiative (JSI) a powerful, collaborative movement working to end sexual harassment in public spaces across Tanzania.

We are excited to join as new partners in this initiative, contributing to a shared mission of creating safer, more respectful communities for women and girls.

As part of the movement we will play an active role in key areas including policy advocacy, community education, and institutional capacity building. Through this, we will support the implementation of PSEAH (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment) policies by:
• Conducting awareness and training sessions in institutions and communities
• Educating girls and the public on their rights and reporting mechanisms
• Promoting safe reporting systems and accountability structures
• Supporting media engagement efforts to shift public attitudes and amplify survivor-centered narratives

We will also contribute to the development of a national policy paper ensuring that real experiences from the community shape stronger, more practical solutions to sexual harassment.

This is more than a partnership it’s a commitment to action, dignity, and lasting impact.✊🏽

We recently had the pleasure of visiting our allies at Girls First Initiative , where we had fruitful and inspiring discussions about our shared commitment to advancing girls’ empowerment and gender justice. ✨
During the meeting, we learned more about their impactful approaches and the incredible work they are doing with girls and young women. We deeply appreciate the dedication and strategies they are implementing to support girls to thrive.

As organizations working within the same movement, the conversation also allowed us to explore meaningful areas where our capacities can complement each other. Together, we reflected on how collaboration and collective action can strengthen our efforts and expand the impact of our work.

We strongly believe that empowering girls requires partnerships, solidarity, and shared vision. We look forward to building collective work that advances opportunities, rights, and leadership for girls and young women

Global conversations about women’s rights are happening every year — but many girls and young women don’t always know about the spaces where these discussions take place.

One of those spaces is the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), the largest global gathering focused on advancing gender equality, hosted by the United Nations.
Through this series, we wanted to break down what CSW is, what happens there, and why it matters for girls and young women everywhere.

While the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women is currently happening in New York City, many young feminists around the world continue to push for greater access, inclusion, and meaningful participation in these spaces.

Sometimes the most powerful lessons we learn in life come from choosing ourselves.

In this Letter to Younger Sisters, Husna Khamis shares a heartfelt reminder to every girl: you don’t have to wait for others to validate your dreams. Trust yourself, keep moving forward, and own your story.

Husna is a nurse, global health activist, and program manager passionate about advancing sexual and reproductive health and HIV advocacy.

If this letter resonates with you, share it with a young girl who needs this reminder today.

Young feminists are on the frontlines of solving some of the most urgent challenges in our communities. Every day, young women leaders organize, educate, advocate, and create solutions for issues affecting girls and women—from education and health to gender equality and leadership.
Yet despite this impact, many young feminists continue to pay the price of leading change with very limited support. Funding systems and resources are often not designed with girls and young women’s leadership in mind, leaving grassroots initiatives struggling to sustain the very work that communities depend on.

As a grassroots organization working with and for girls and young women, WOYOMO was honored to participate in the official launch of the renewed Women’s Voices and Leadership Tanzania Project. This initiative recognizes the power of young feminists and young women leaders who are shaping systems with and for girls.

Witnessing intentional commitments to support young women’s leadership in Tanzania gives us hope. Because when young women are trusted, resourced, and supported, they don’t just participate in change — they lead it.

Happy international Women’s Day 2026.

This International Women’s Day, We celebrates the power of giving to gain. 💜

Across our communities, women and girls continue to give their time, knowledge, courage, and leadership to build a more just and equal world. Every act of support, mentorship, and solidarity creates ripples of change that uplift not only individuals, but entire communities.

At WOYOMO, we believe that when we invest in women and girls we all gain stronger societies, healthier families, and more inclusive futures.
