Africa Academy for Public Health - AAPH We address public health priority challenges via research, training and practice.

At the World Health Summit Regional Meeting in Nairobi, Dr. Innocent Yusufu, Research and Programs Manager at contributed to a critical discussion on mental health — a conversation that remains deeply pertinent for the continent.

His reflections underscored the need for more deliberate and rigorous approaches to mental health system design: strengthening grassroots implementation, and investing in sustained learning mechanisms that wil build capacity for care across the health workforce.

AAPH is encouraged by the attention and dedicated space given to these conversations, as mental health continues to gain the prominence it requires within broader health systems discourse. As we continue to push for progress in this area, the emphasis remains on ensuring that dialogue is matched with well-designed, contextually grounded interventions that can be implemented effectively at scale.

As we rethink systems, we must also rethink how we speak about mental health — from reducing over-reliance on task shifting, to developing language that truly reflects lived experiences, and creating clearer pathways for learning and care.

Dr. Innocent's panel discussion is a reminder that progress starts not just with policy, but with learning and understanding.

Health systems don’t strengthen themselves.
They are built, sustained, and improved by people—every day, across every level.

This Labour Day, recognizes the workforce turning effort into impact.

Day 1 at the World Health Summit Regional Meeting in Nairobi set a clear tone: the time for conversation alone has passed — this is a moment for coordinated, decisive action.

As global health priorities shift within an increasingly complex landscape, the Keynote Speakers called for a renewed health architecture — one that is more responsive, more equitable, and grounded in strong regional leadership.

From AAPH’s perspective, this isn’t abstract. It’s a necessary step. Strengthening systems, amplifying African-led solutions, and ensuring that policy translates into real outcomes for communities must sit at the center of what comes next.

The challenge is clear. So is the opportunity.

Ahead of the World Health Summit Regional Meeting 2026, joined fellow members of the Academic Alliance in Nairobi for the 2026 Spring Assembly.

Bringing together academic and research institutions from across the globe, the convening created space to align on priorities for the year ahead—strengthening collaboration, shaping contributions to the upcoming Summit, and advancing the Alliance’s strategic direction on visibility, growth, and impact.

For AAPH, this is an important moment to engage with partners at the intersection of research, policy, and practice. It reinforces the role of academic and professional networks in driving evidence-informed approaches to some of our most pressing health challenges.

As the WHS Reginal Meeting begins, we carry forward a shared commitment to collaboration and co-creating a platform where evidence continues to inform action where it matters most.

Last week, participated in the 2-day HIV Delivery Grantee Summit hosted by the Gates Foundation 🌍

The convening created space for candid reflection on what it will take to deliver impact in an increasingly financially constrained environment — with a strong focus on sharpening coordinated action, deepening partnerships, and accelerating shared learning across the public health community. 🤝

, represented by our CEO, Dr. Mary Mwanyika Sando, and Frank Tanser, a consortium partner from SACEMA, contributed perspectives as subgrantees under the Project: Syndemic Modelling for HIV and NCDs. This work is helping us think differently about how HIV services can be better integrated with care for non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension — with the goal of improving outcomes while making better use of limited resources.

We appreciate the opportunity to engage in a process that emphasized practical collaboration and forward-looking solutions.
