We are incredibly proud to celebrate a major milestone for our team member at SOA Tanzania # 🇹🇿🌊

Our Campaign Manager, Divan Joseph , has been selected as part of the 2026 cohort of the × Ocean Leaders Fellowship.

Selected from over 2,100 applicants across 163 countries, this highly competitive fellowship brings together 40 outstanding ocean leaders working across science, policy, and community-led conservation to advance the global 30x30 vision.

At SOA Tanzania, we have seen Divan’s leadership firsthand from driving youth-led campaigns to amplifying ocean advocacy across Tanzania. His selection reflects not only his dedication, but also the growing impact of youth leadership emerging from our coastal communities.

As she joins this global network, we are confident he will continue to elevate voices from Tanzania especially those of coastal communities working on the frontlines of ocean conservation.

Congratulations, Divan 👏🌊
Your journey inspires a generation.

🌊🌊 OCEAN WAVES… BIG NEWS COMING IN! 🌊🌊

We are proud to share that our Grass Underwater Project has been selected as one of the supported initiatives under the Great Blue Wall by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) 💙

Out of 14 initiatives across the Western Indian Ocean, our work on seagrass restoration in Tanzania is now part of a regional movement restoring critical coastal ecosystems and supporting sustainable livelihoods.

From a simple observation on our beaches in 2020… to a youth-led movement mobilizing communities to protect seagrass meadows — this moment means everything.

This is for:
🌊 Our ocean
🌱 Our communities
🐠 Our biodiversity
🌍 Our future

And we are just getting started.
More science. More action. More impact.

🌊 What if we tell you that in every one minute the world loses seagrass the size of a football field?

Yes that’s how fast we are losing one of the ocean’s most important ecosystems.

And here’s something even more alarming: healthy seagrass meadows help sustain healthy coral reefs. These ecosystems — mangroves, seagrass, and coral reefs — are interconnected and exist in a delicate balance. When we lose seagrass, we also weaken the survival of coral reefs and the countless species that depend on them.

Seagrass meadows support thousands of marine species, including endangered animals like sea turtles and dugongs. Simply put — we cannot afford to lose them.

That’s why since 2021, SOA Tanzania has been working to conserve and restore seagrass meadows in Tanzania, while raising awareness so that seagrass becomes a recognized and valued ocean habitat for everyone via our project

Our seagrass initiative, Grass Underwater, is proudly endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade

🌿 Restoring Mangroves, Restoring Hope

Since 2021, our community of Ocean Leaders and coastal community members has been working together to restore mangrove ecosystems along the coast of Tanzania.

Together, we have adopted over 5,000+ hectares of mangrove forests, working closely with partners and local authorities to conserve, restore, and monitor these critical ecosystems, while also empowering coastal communities through regenerative blue economy opportunities.

Last year, we supported local livelihoods by training community members on mangrove honey production and providing 10 beehives to coastal communities. Through this initiative alone, 300+ coastal community members have been directly impacted, strengthening both ecosystem restoration and sustainable livelihoods.

🌍 Why Mangroves?
Mangroves protect our coastlines from erosion and storms, store vast amounts of carbon, support fisheries, and sustain the livelihoods of millions of coastal people.

🤝 Want to support mangrove conservation?
Join us in protecting and restoring Tanzania’s mangroves. Together, we can safeguard these vital ecosystems for people, climate, and the ocean.

🌊 Introducing Our New Hub Leader

We are excited to introduce Shadya Ngirini as the new Hub Leader of SOA Tanzania.

Shadya is a dedicated marine scientist with a deep passion for ocean conservation, ecosystem restoration, and youth empowerment. As a co-founder of SOA Tanzania, she has been part of the journey since the very beginning and has contributed over 6 years of leadership, commitment, and impact to our growing community.

Throughout the years, Shadya has played an important role in strengthening youth engagement, advancing ocean literacy, and supporting restoration initiatives that protect Tanzania’s marine ecosystems.

We are proud to see her step into this leadership role as we continue empowering young ocean leaders and coastal communities to protect and restore our ocean.

👏 Congratulations Shadya — the journey continues!

Today we celebrate the strength, leadership, and resilience of women around the world on International Women’s Day 🌍💙

At Sustainable Ocean Alliance Tanzania, we recognize the incredible role women play in protecting our ocean and sustaining coastal communities. From women restoring mangroves and protecting seagrass meadows, to seaweed farmers, community leaders, scientists, and young ocean activists, women are at the heart of ocean solutions.

Across Tanzania’s coast, women are not only guardians of marine ecosystems but also champions of sustainable livelihoods, climate resilience, and community leadership.

Today we celebrate their voices, their knowledge, and their leadership.

When women lead, communities thrive.
When women are empowered, the ocean is protected.
When women rise, the future becomes more sustainable.

Happy International Women’s Day to all the inspiring women protecting our ocean and shaping a better world. 🌊👩🏾‍🔬

Last week, SOA Tanzania had the privilege of participating in a four-day intensive Capacity Building Session organized by VSO Tanzania.

Throughout the training, we engaged in both indoor learning and outdoor practical sessions, strengthening our understanding of Power Shift and Locally Led Development tools. The hands-on exercises enabled us to apply context analysis, power mapping and intersectionality approaches directly to our projects and organizational strategic planning.

This experience has deepened our commitment to community-driven conservation and strengthened the sustainability of our initiatives along Tanzania’s coastal ecosystems.

We move forward more equipped, more reflective and more grounded in locally led action. All thanks to for this invaluable and eyes opening session.

How did they get into our ocean?
And how do we stop this? 🤔

These were the urgent questions our Ocean Leaders asked during the Global Ocean Clean-Up 2025 supported by .society

Among the plastic waste and debris, we made a deeply alarming discovery: 106 used medical syringes — many with needles still intact.

This is not just marine pollution.
- It is a public health crisis.
- It is a governance failure.
- It is an environmental emergency.

Improper medical waste disposal poses a direct threat to coastal communities, marine life, and ocean ecosystems. From needle-stick injuries to toxic contamination, the risks extend far beyond the shoreline.

This moment calls for urgent policy action, stronger waste management systems, and tighter coordination between the public health and environmental sectors. Our ocean should never become a dumping ground for hazardous waste.

At SOA Tanzania, we believe ocean restoration must go hand in hand with accountability and systems change.

The question is no longer “How did this happen?”
The question is “What are we going to do about it?”
