A child should be in school, not in marriage.

Yet for decades, Tanzania’s Law of Marriage Act has allowed girls to be married before the age of 18, despite the fact that our laws recognize every person under 18 as a child. Courts have already affirmed that marriage before 18 violates the rights, dignity and equality of girls and have called for the law to be aligned accordingly.

Child marriage cuts childhood short. It increases the risk of school dropout, early pregnancy, violence and lost opportunities. It limits a girl’s ability to decide her own future.

When a girl stays in school, she is more likely to be healthy, economically empowered and able to contribute fully to her community and country.

A child is a child. The law should say so too.

It’s time to align all laws with the principle that every child deserves protection, opportunity and the right to reach adulthood before marriage.

29% of girls in Tanzania are married before the age of 18.

Child marriage continues to deny many girls their right to education, health and a future of their choosing. While the Law of the Child recognizes everyone under 18 as a child, girls still face barriers that put them at risk of leaving school too soon.

Every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, develop skills and reach her full potential. Achieving this requires stronger action to end child marriage, align laws and policies with children’s rights, invest in quality education and create safe environments where girls can thrive.

Because when girls gain education and skills, they become forces of change.

Periods are natural, not shameful 🩸

No girl should start their period without knowing what is happening to their body, and without access to sanitary products.

Every girl should have access to accurate information and a clean, private toilet facility especially in schools.

By improving menstrual health and tackling period-shame, we can improve girls’ attendance and performance at school, break down taboos and misconceptions around menstruation, raise girls’ self-esteem and enable girls to fully participate in all aspects of society.

Listening, learning and shared experiences shaped a recent sponsorship visit bringing together colleagues from ,communities and teams in Mwanza and Geita.

Across schools, health centres and community groups, the visit created space for open conversations with children, young people, teachers, caregivers and local leaders about the realities shaping their everyday lives.

Meeting girls determined to continue their education, spending time with children with disabilities, and engaging with young people building small businesses through their own initiatives revealed stories of resilience, ambition and strong community support.

The visit offered an important reminder that meaningful work grows through relationships, trust and learning directly from communities themselves.
