Ministerial Ethics: How to Carry Yourself as a Guest Speaker or Preacher
1. Arrive Early – Be at the venue well before the service starts. It shows respect for the host, the congregation, and the Holy Spirit.
2. Dress Appropriately – Your appearance should reflect the dignity of your calling. Dress decently, neatly, and in a way that suits the host ministry’s culture.
3. Submit to the Host Pastor – Never act as if you are in charge. Acknowledge that you are under the authority of the host pastor or leadership while you are there.
4. Be Courteous and Humble – Speak and act with humility. Avoid arrogance, pride, or boasting about your ministry or achievements.
5. Avoid Doctrinal Controversy – Don’t use another church’s pulpit to correct or attack doctrines. Stick to what edifies and builds the Body of Christ.
6. Preach Within the Time Given – Honor the time allotted to you. Going far beyond your time is a sign of poor discipline and disrespect.
7. Respect the Worship Flow – Don’t interrupt the program or impose your own structure. Follow the service order as set by the host.
8. Be Spirit-Led, Not Showy – Minister under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, not to impress people or display your gifts.
9. Avoid Financial Manipulation – Don’t raise offerings or make financial appeals unless you were asked to. Don’t demand a particular honorarium.
10. Speak Well of the Host Pastor and Church – Always honor the one who invited you. Never compare their ministry to yours or criticize their leadership.
11. Mind Your Words After Service – Be careful what you say in private conversations. Don’t gossip or make negative remarks about the event, church, or members.
12. Respect Protocol – Sit where you are assigned, follow ushers’ directions, and acknowledge dignitaries appropriately.
13. Avoid Flirting or Inappropriate Behavior – Keep professional and holy conduct with both men and women. Maintain integrity in all your interactions.
14. Be Approachable but Wise – Be friendly to members who want to greet you, but avoid unnecessary familiarity that may lead to misunderstandings.
15. Guard the Altar – Don’t allow unauthorized persons to minister with you unless the host agrees. Respect the sanctity of that platform.
16. Handle Prophecy with Care – Don’t give personal prophecies or rebukes publicly without the host’s permission. Be discreet and sensitive.
17. Acknowledge God, Not Yourself – Let your preaching glorify Jesus, not your personality or experiences. Avoid drawing attention to yourself.
18. Express Gratitude – After the service, thank the host and appreciate the congregation. A simple word of thanks leaves a lasting impression.
19. Follow Up Gracefully – A message or call of appreciation after the program shows maturity and good manners.
20. Leave a Sweet Spirit Behind – Let your presence build unity, not division. When you leave, the church should feel edified, not offended.
