2026 St.Patrick's Visit at our WIM Center 🇹🇿🤝🏻🇮🇪🌊♻️☘️🌍

Last week we had the honour of welcoming the Irish Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity Hon.Christopher O’Sullivan, during his St. Patrick’s visit in Tanzania at Coco Beach Waste Information Centre which is also supported by the Irish Embassy in Tanzania.

Alongside the visit, we had a chance to take him through the steps of our ongoing daily operations at the center, the current waste management initiatives and our great Solar panels system created by

It was a privilege to host this visit and connect with Tanzanian environmental activists sharing their input on the topic of environmental responsibility and community.

A big thanks to the Embassy of Ireland in Tanzania for this opportunity.

This Women’s Day Week, we celebrate women not only as leaders and changemakers, but also as creators of solutions in their communities.
Through the BINTI Project, women are trained in the production of reusable sanitary pads empowering them with skills that support girls’ menstrual health while creating opportunities for economic empowerment.
When women are equipped with knowledge and skills, they uplift entire communities.

The Black Bottle Project is continuing with a focus on building a sustainable and financially stable system.

[Sharing results]
The project’s progress and outcomes were presented at the KOICA-NGO Volunteer Tanzania Performance Sharing Seminar, sharing key results and field experiences from the pilot phase.

[Black Bottle Taka Taka Bag]
A Black Bottle Project version of the taka taka bag was developed to support more consistent collection of PET bottles.
After a sample phase, the bags have been provided from today (26th) to the 8 waste pickers collaborating with the project.

[Continued participation]
Following the transition to a cash-based exchange, 3 waste pickers now participate regularly, with plans to gradually expand participation.

[Operational collaboration]
To support a sustainable operating structure, Africraft is preparing an MOU with PREYO, an experienced PET recycling company.
PREYO will support practical operations, including bottle collection and machine operation.
The machine has been relocated to their factory, and processing will follow after the MOU is finalized.

No gas or electricity. Cooking done with firewood only.

Open kitchen structure
→ smoke spreading across the school
→ excessive firewood use.

Resulting in forest degradation and increased carbon emissions.

Kitchen improvement and environmental education
at Bongoyo Primary School & Msasani B Primary School.

Results:
🔥 Bongoyo: 56% less firewood used
🔥 Msasani B: 70% less firewood used

Less firewood, lower carbon emissions, greater environmental awareness. 🌍🤝

As part of the Black Bottle Project, a community street clean-up was held on the last Saturday of January around Tandale Pakacha Street. The event was organized by Africraft and ATD Tanzania, with support from KOICA.

When plastic bottles are improperly discarded, they remain on streets, block drains, and degrade the local environment. This activity brought neighbors together to clean their area and collect colored PET bottles for recycling.

Strong participation from local residents and children stood out, alongside students from UDSM and NIT, local partner organizations, and street-level government officers. A total of 107 people participated, and 117kg of PET bottles were collected. All collected bottles have been delivered to Africraft for recycling preparation.

At the Africraft office, a baling machine test was conducted last week. A total of 1,157kg of bottles is scheduled for compression next week — supporting the project’s sustainability and the effective use of collected materials.
Thank you to everyone who continues to support this work.

Today, we held a group meeting to mark the close of the KOICA-supported exchange phase of the Black Bottle Project with waste pickers — a meaningful milestone, and not the end of the work.

Since November, over nine exchange days, we have collected a total of 1,040kg of black PET bottles. We shared these results together and reflected on what worked well and what we want to improve.

We also confirmed the next step: moving from the KOICA-supported crop exchange to a cash-based exchange, and forming a cooperative group with participants’ agreement. We plan to expand our collaboration starting in February.

This phase may be complete, but it also opens a new chapter — we will keep collecting black PET bottles, supporting waste pickers through fair exchange and stronger community cooperation, while keeping our streets cleaner.

Today, a meaningful step toward improving children’s school meals took place at Bongoyo Primary School and Msasani B Primary School in Dar es Salaam. 🌍🔥

We held a kitchen handover ceremony, providing improved school kitchens designed to reduce smoke and harmful emissions.

Until now, school meals at these schools were prepared using traditional three-stone fires, exposing both cooks and children to constant smoke and air pollution.

The newly installed kitchens aim to support:
✔ Carbon Reduction
✔ Climate Awareness
✔ Improved School Cooking

Through upcoming environmental and climate education for teachers, as well as student club activities, we hope to work together with schools and local communities to create sustainable, long-term change. 🍀

Yesterday, 7 waste pickers visited and collected 107.6kg of black PET bottles, bringing the total to 844.5kg.

Alongside the exchange, we held a small meeting to review the remaining schedule — including the final crop-based exchange next Monday — and to discuss the transition as the KOICA-supported phase wraps up in early February, with Africraft taking the lead going forward.

We also gathered feedback from the past eight exchange days, reflecting growing understanding of the black bottle cycle, with safety gear making collection safer and fair, transparent exchanges strengthening motivation.
A wrap-up gathering next Thursday will mark the close of this phase and create space to reflect before moving forward together.

Day 7 of collection: the team continues to participate consistently.
7 waste pickers visited and collected 139.9kg of black PET bottles, bringing the total to 470.1kg.
One individual delivered 44kg, the highest individual contribution recorded so far.

On Wednesday, we visited the factory producing the baling machine to review the current progress.
Next Thursday, we will hold a brief meeting with participants to share updates, conduct a mid-point check-in, and discuss the next steps.
