We, Tanzania Child Welfare, we proudly join the global community in commemorating International Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026 — a day dedicated to breaking the silence, stigma, and inequalities surrounding menstruation.

Menstruation is a natural and dignified part of life, yet millions of girls and women around the world continue to face barriers to safe menstrual hygiene management, education, healthcare, and equal participation in society.

On this International Menstrual Hygiene Day, Tanzania Child Welfare (TCW) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to promoting menstrual health, dignity, and rights for every girl and woman. We believe that access to accurate information, affordable menstrual products, safe sanitation facilities, and supportive communities is not a privilege, but a fundamental human right.

As we mark this important day, we call upon governments, development partners, schools, communities, families, and young people to work collectively towards ending menstrual stigma and ensuring that no girl misses education, opportunities, or her full potential because of menstruation.

Together, let us create a society where menstruation is discussed with dignity, managed safely, and embraced without shame.

Happy International Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026.

As TCW, we recognise that engaging Men and boys in the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is essential in building a safe, equal, and just society for all. When men are actively involved as part of the solution, they help challenge harmful social norms, promote accountability within communities, and become strong advocates for positive change within families and society at large. Their participation also contributes to raising awareness on the impact of GBV and AA fostering respectful relationships that protect the rights and wellbeing of women and children.

In recognition of this importance, (TAMWA), in collaboration with MenEngage Tanzania Network, organised an important dialogue on 08 May 2026.

The dialogue provided a valuable platform for participants to discuss the role of men in preventing and combating GBV, strengthening community collaboration, and enhancing protection mechanisms for women and children. The discussions also highlighted the importance of education, positive parenting, and coordinated efforts among government institutions, civil society organisations, media stakeholders, and communities.

The meeting was attended by officers from the Gender Desks in Dar es Salaam and Tanga, Social Welfare Officers, teachers, students, journalists, and other key stakeholders, all demonstrating a shared commitment to ending Gender-Based Violence and promoting gender equality in Tanzania.

Halili Halifa is a Social Worker and District Social Welfare Officer serving at Mwananyamala Referral Hospital, where the GBV One Stop Centre is also based. She is uniquely recognised for establishing and mobilising bodaboda groups to become champions in the fight against Gender-Based Violence while also promoting a culture of regular health check-ups among men and community members.

She has further distinguished herself through effective leadership of District groups and her strong commitment to supporting cases involving violence against women and children, while ensuring that men are not excluded from the conversation and response mechanisms.

Tanzania Child Welfare (TCW) commends her for the excellent work she continues to do. We have also committed ourselves to collaborating with her and other stakeholders in advancing our shared goals.

Often, when women come together, there is an important agenda behind the meeting. We met to discuss effective ways of engaging men as part of the efforts to combat Gender-Based Violence.

Thank you to Tanzania Media Women’s Association (TAMWA) and MenEngage Tanzania for bringing us together.

02 April 2026 Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) play a vital and transformative role in advancing justice, equality, and dignity within our societies. Their work extends beyond advocacy; they stand at the forefront of protecting fundamental rights, amplifying the voices of the marginalised, and holding institutions accountable to national and international human rights standards.

Their responsibilities are both demanding and courageous. WHRDs engage in community mobilisation, legal and policy advocacy, awareness-raising, and the provision of support to survivors of human rights violations. They challenge harmful social norms, promote gender equality, and contribute significantly to peacebuilding and inclusive development.

Despite their critical contributions, WHRDs continue to face considerable challenges, including limited resources, restrictive legal environments, social stigma, and risks to their personal safety and well-being. These realities highlight the urgent need for stronger protection mechanisms and sustained institutional support.

Importantly, this International Women’s Day (IWD) gathering also served as a space for self-care, reflection, and collective wellbeing. It provided an opportunity for Women Human Rights Defenders to connect, rejuvenate, and celebrate their shared commitment, bringing together participants from various regions of Mainland Tanzania as well as Zanzibar. Such spaces are essential in strengthening resilience, solidarity, and sustained engagement in human rights work.

In this regard, sincere appreciation is extended to the CWHRDs Network for organising this meaningful and timely event. Your leadership in creating platforms that recognise, support, and empower Women Human Rights Defenders is highly commendable.

Together, let us continue to stand in solidarity and ensure that the work and wellbeing of WHRDs remain protected, valued, and sustained.
