“Mama mjamzito anaenda almost kilometer 20 kuchota maji.”

This is a powerful testimony from Grace Scorey during our filmmaking residency. She shared a heartbreaking truth about the impact of in her community. When you know a pregnant mother is trekking 20km for water with no support system, the camera moves differently.

This session grounded the Cohort in the why behind Sinema Connect North. We aren’t just making movies, we are documenting the struggle for dignity and survival of the Indigenous Communities in the Northern Zone.

24 Hours. 15 Filmmakers. One Cinematic Film.🔥

You’re looking at what happens when passion meets pressure! In the best way😄

The Sinema Connect North Cohort had exactly one day to:
✍️ Write a script from scratch
🎥 Rig the gear
🎭 Rehearse & Block
✂️ Edit the final cut

And they Smashed It!

If they can do this in a day, imagine what they’re going to do in June!🤭

If you’ve ever wondered what we do at MEDEA Tanzania, someone once put it beautifully and simply: “Partying with Purpose.” And honestly, that’s exactly what it feels like.

We use art not just as expression, but as a powerful tool for community mobilisation; bringing people together, sparking dialogue, and inspiring action. More importantly, we believe in truly community-centered approaches, where the people most affected are not just participants, but leaders in shaping solutions to the challenges they face.

With the support of the , over the past four years we have worked to address barriers to girls’ education in ways that place the community at the heart of the change. This has allowed us not only to support girls in staying and thriving in school, but also to refine and embrace creative approaches that are proving impactful in driving community-led advocacy.

Because when communities lead, change lasts.

At the beginning of the screening, we asked the audience to watch this film through the lens of a mirror, an invitation to see their own journeys and the structural realities of Tanzanian women reflected in the story of Juliana.

As the film Act of Love breathed life into the room, that mirror became a bridge of shared vulnerability. There was a heavy, deep-seated silence that fell over us, broken only by the sharp, helpless cries of a baby on screen that seemed to echo the quiet struggles many in the room have faced alone.

Tears flowed freely as we watched the heartbreaking friction between Juliana’s simple need for grace and the cold, rigid policy systems that so often turn a blind eye to a woman’s humanity. It was this shared ache that brought our generations together, veteran leaders glimpsed their own early battles, while the youth saw the face of the struggles we still navigate today.

By the time the closing credits came up, the silence was replaced by a collective realization, that Juliana’s tragedy was not a personal failure, but a systemic one.

The dialogue that followed made it clear that we must move beyond temporary fixes and demand a total restructuring of the institutions that govern women’s lives.

Justice for the women of and require an evolution of our laws and community rules, ensuring that no mother is ever again left to carry the weight of an entire system’s failure in the dark.

Celebrating with a powerful screening of Act of Love. A compelling story of Juliana, a young mother navigating immense challenges as she struggles to find stability for herself and her daughter amid societal pressures.

During this celebration in collaboration with the film screening will serve as a safe entry point for discussing personal leadership journeys and institutional failures that marginalise the rights of women and girls and reflect on the global theme.

We’ve officially concluded our stakeholder inception meetings across Arusha and Manyara for the Sinema Connect North Project. By engaging directly with local authorities and community members, we’ve conducted a baseline assessment to bridge the gap between media advocacy and climate justice.

Our goal is to ensure that when we use film to advocate for our environment, it is rooted in the authentic knowledge and readiness of the people who live these stories every day.

The energy has been inspiring. From Arusha to Manyara, there is a clear hunger to see local narratives driving global change.

If Arusha’s stories were on the big screen, what would the world learn?

Ms. Kachery’s profound response, “the world would learn a-lot. Many cross cutting issues from grass root levels, how youth deal with issues in climate change, leadership, political spaces and other sectors, the youth are really engaging.” Is the profound basis in which the Sinema Connect North project works on. Together, with youths from indigenous communities in Arusha and Manyara, stakeholders from NGOs and CBOs and local government authorities, we are amplifying their stories.

If you’re a director, scriptwriter, DOP, editor, sound recordist, or creative mind contributing to the filmmaking process, we invite you to join us in amplifying these key narratives that will shape our communities’ narratives.
