The legacy lives on in Gombe National Park
More than 65 years after Dr Jane Goodall first stepped into this forest with a notebook and binoculars, a new generation continues her groundbreaking work with wild chimpanzees.

The Legacy Lives in Gombe, a cinematic short documentary by Stephano Lihedule, takes you deep into the daily lives of researchers who walk the same trails, observing, documenting, and witnessing the ongoing story of one of science’s most important discoveries.

Through the work of the Jane Goodall Institute and programs like Roots & Shoots, this legacy goes beyond research, reaching communities, inspiring youth, and shaping the future of conservation.

A story of science, dedication, and hope, proving that one person’s vision can inspire generations to protect our natural world.

Celebrating Dr. Jane Goodall’s birthday with a powerful milestone.

We’re proud to share the unveiling of the Jane Goodall Earth Medal by STARMUS, recognizing individuals leading the way in protecting life on Earth.
Inspired by hope, responsibility, and care for our planet, the medal symbolizes humanity’s role as guardians of nature and champions of a sustainable future.
The award will be presented at STARMUS VIII: The Search for Truth (Oct 17–22, 2026) in the Canary Islands, with the first recipient to be announced soon.
Together, let’s continue to protect, restore, and inspire, for people, for wildlife, and for our shared home.
The soundtrack written and orchestrated by musician Rick Wakeman and played to jane in front of a live audience when Jane was in Bratislava in 2024 for Starmus.

🎉 Today, we celebrate 49 years of the Jane Goodall Institute! 🌱 Nearly five decades ago, Dr. Jane Goodall founded the very first JGI office in the United States. Now, there are 30 offices around the world carrying out her vision to inspire hope and transform it into action.

Here is how we uphold Jane's legacy of scientific discovery and conservation advocacy:

🐵 Jane redefined both science and mankind with her discovery that chimpanzees make and use tools. We continue her research at the Gombe Stream Research Center, which holds the record for the longest running wild chimpanzee study (and the longest running baboon study, too)
💚 Jane loved all animals and passionately championed their welfare. She founded JGI's Tchimpounga sanctuary in 1992, which provides best in class care for species rescued from the illegal wildlife trade — including over 150 chimpanzees.
🌳 When Jane learned about the threats facing chimpanzees, she switched her focus from science to advocacy. In 1994 she launched JGI’s signature community-led conservation approach, known as Tacare, now used in over 100 villages in Africa. Most notably, the Tacare approach has helped local communities restore and protect much of the forest habitat surrounding Gombe in Western Tanzania, where Jane’s research began.
🌱 One of Jane's greatest reasons for hope was that young people have the power to make a positive difference. Our global youth program, Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots, also just celebrated an anniversary — 35 years of inspiring action on behalf of people, other animals, and the environment!

Jane's work is not done. Together, we can, will, and must protect the natural world that she loved so dearly.

*The Jane Goodall Institute does not endorse handling, interacting with, or close proximity to chimpanzees or other wildlife. The animals shown here are cared for by trained professionals at an accredited facility.

Today, on International Day of Girls and Women in Science, we celebrate Dr. Jane Goodall, an iconic trailblazer whose research forever changed science 🔍🐵👱‍♀️

Jane's groundbreaking wild chimpanzee study challenged long-held scientific beliefs, including her observations that chimpanzees make tools, form deep social bonds, and experience emotion. At a time when most animal studies were taking place in captivity, Jane became one of the first to study primates in the wild — and at a time when women, in her words, "didn't do that sort of thing." Through patience, curiosity, and profound respect for her subjects, Jane reshaped how we understand animals and proved that empathy belongs at the heart of science.

Join us in celebrating Jane and women like her who paved the way. Thank you for inspiring all those who are innovating today, and all the scientists-to-be who will change the world.

“The United Republic of Tanzania recognizes that Dr. Jane Goodall’s legacy extends far beyond scientific discovery. Her work reshaped global conservation thinking by demonstrating that the survival of wildlife is inseparable from the well-being of surrounding communities,” - Dr. Joel Lwoga, Director General of the National Museums of Tanzania.

Dr. Lwoga further emphasized that as we honour her legacy today, we also renew our commitment. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, through Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), in close collaboration with the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) Tanzania, reaffirms its dedication to safeguarding the forests of Gombe for research, conservation, and sustainable tourism, while strengthening conservation initiatives nationwide.
Dr. Jane Goodall’s legacy lives on in the forests of Gombe, in the hearts of our youth, in the conscience of humanity, and in our national aspirations as articulated in Tanzania’s Development Vision, Dira 2050.

In Jane Goodall's words,
“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
One year since the late Dr. Jane Goodall inaugurated the Pollinator Garden. Her belief in the power of nature continues to grow, right here at Terra.
