Behind this group photo are students, teachers, community members, and environmental champions united by a common goal: protecting our ocean. Together, 149+ participants removed 293+ bags of waste weighing 1,821 kg from the coastal environment.

But the true impact goes beyond the numbers. This photo represents new knowledge gained, stronger community connections, and young people empowered to become leaders in ocean conservation. It represents students who witnessed the realities of marine pollution and chose to be part of the solution.

Thank you to every student, teacher, community member, and partner who made this day a success.

In our workshops, students learn about marine pollution, waste management, and the impacts of plastic on ocean ecosystems.

During the (Waste Assessment and Brand Audit) session, students moved beyond simply collecting waste. They investigated it, categorized it, recorded data, and identified the types of items polluting the coastline.

This hands-on exercise helped students answer an important question: Where does ocean pollution come from? By analyzing the waste they collected themselves, students connected classroom discussions about pollution sources, consumer behavior, and waste management challenges to the reality unfolding along our coast.

The experience transformed students from learners into citizen scientists—equipping them with evidence, data, and a deeper understanding of how everyday choices can impact marine ecosystems. Conservation starts with awareness, but lasting change begins when knowledge is supported by action and data.

Beach cleanups are more than waste collection activities, they are practical conservation actions that protect marine ecosystems by preventing litter from entering the ocean, harming wildlife, and degrading coastal habitats.

For students, beach cleanups provide valuable learning opportunities beyond the classroom. They transform environmental concepts into real-life experiences, allowing students to witness the impacts of pollution firsthand, develop problem-solving skills, and understand their role in protecting the environment. By participating in cleanups and waste assessments, students become active stewards of the ocean, connecting knowledge with action and gaining a deeper appreciation for conservation and sustainable living.

Through these experiences, young people learn that protecting the ocean is not only a lesson, it is a shared responsibility and an opportunity to create positive change in their communities.

What happens when students step out of the classroom and onto the shoreline?

At Silver sands Beach, more than 149 participants including students from Kondo Secondary School and Mtakuja Secondary School, teachers, community members, and partner organizations came together for a student-led beach cleanup that turned environmental education into real-world action.

Over 126 students experienced firsthand the scale of marine pollution, collecting waste that would otherwise find its way into the ocean, threaten marine life, and damage coastal ecosystems. Every bottle, plastic wrapper, and discarded item collected represents one less threat to fish, seabirds, turtles, and other marine species that depend on healthy oceans.

Students from Toangoma and Malela Secondary Schools also had the opportunity to learn from Jonas Lukandiga, a community development officer from Marine Parks and Reserves Unit Tanzania ().

During the session, students were introduced to the importance of marine protected areas, biodiversity conservation, and the role coastal communities play in protecting Tanzania’s marine ecosystems for future generations.

Through collaboration with conservation institutions and environmental educators, students continue gaining valuable knowledge and inspiration to support sustainable ocean management and the growth of Tanzania’s blue economy

Showcasing Future Careers in Ocean Conservation!

Students from Toangoma and Malela Secondary Schools had an inspiring session with , who introduced students to the growing world of careers in ocean conservation and the blue economy.

Through engaging discussions, students explored future opportunities in marine science, environmental education, filmmaking, conservation research, marine tourism, diving, policy advocacy, and digital storytelling for conservation. The session encouraged students to see ocean conservation not only as environmental responsibility, but also as a pathway for innovation, leadership, and sustainable livelihoods.

also shared the trailer of Mama Nyangumi (Mother Whale) – Guardians of Humpback Highways, giving students a glimpse into the beauty and importance of humpback whales and the need to protect marine migration routes and ocean ecosystems.

The documentary trailer sparked excitement and meaningful conversations among students about marine biodiversity, ocean storytelling, and the power of media in raising awareness for conservation action.
