Last week, we asked: If the door doesn’t fit the person, who needs to change?

So this week, we went back to the door and… turns out there’s a lot going on. 🔐

There’s the way we register people.
The way we measure who’s actually participating.
The way we expect contributions to come in and,
Whether what we’re offering even feels relevant to someone’s life.

Here’s the twist, not everyone gets stuck at the same point.

🌾 The farmer
🏠 The domestic worker
🧺 The trader

They may all be outside the system, but their reasons for being there can look completely different. There isn’t one “informal worker” problem; there are different people, different realities, and different things getting in the way.

We mapped them out.

Okay, but who exactly is an informal worker? 👀

You might picture a trader. 🧺
It could also be the farmer whose income comes at harvest. 🌾
The boda rider. 🛵
The tailor. 🧵
The mechanic with a steady stream of customers. 🔧
Or the woman caring for a relative at home, with no wage attached to the work she does. 🏠

Different lives. Different incomes. Different working days.

Regardless, our social security systems ask all of them to fit into the same mould:
👔 An employer.
💰 A monthly salary.
📄 A payslip.
✍🏾 A contract.
📅 A contribution that comes in every month, like clockwork.

And if none of that describes your working life?

Where exactly are you supposed to fit? 🤔

That’s the question.

Because being unable to enter the system is different from choosing not to enter it.

And if the door doesn’t fit the person, telling them to knock harder probably isn’t the answer. 🚪

Maybe the door needs rethinking.

This month, we’re looking at the locks one by one. 🔐

And the conversation doesn’t stop there.
