Understanding The power of the Tongue

The Lord is set to deliver many of us from the crises and troubles that our tongues have brought on us.

Our tongue is the most powerful part of our physical body. What the trigger is to a gun is what our tongue is to our life. All through the scriptures, the Bible makes it very clear that we must be careful how we use our tongue. Why? How you use your tongue or how others use their tongues against you will either make or break you. It is eternally impossible to succeed in life if you don’t know how to use your tongue. And all through this month, we shall be looking at the strategic nature of our tongue and how we can overcome problems associated with the wrong use of our tongues and develop a Spirit-controlled tongue.

Let me make it very practical.

1. The wrong use of the tongue has ruined many marriages;
2. The wrong use of the tongue by leaders has brought civil war into many countries;
3. The wrong use of the tongue has led to untimely death for many people;
4. The wrong use of the tongue has opened the door to demonic affliction, stagnancy and failure for many Christians;
5. The wrong use of the tongue has closed down churches and ministries;
6. The wrong use of the tongue has invited unwanted battles into people’s lives;
7. The wrong use of the tongue ruins valuable relationships;
8. The wrong use of the tongue has sent many people to hell.

You and I must therefore take this teaching very seriously, as a matter of life and death. Let’s look at the Bible and glean wisdom from God’s word on the importance of the tongue.

1. Your tongue devises destruction, Like a sharp razor, working deceitfully, Psalm 52-2;
2. Keep your tongue from evil, And your lips from speaking deceit, Psalm 34-13;
3. The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, And his tongue talks of justice, Psalm 37-30;
4. The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness, Proverbs 15-2;
5. Whoever guards his mouth and tongue, Keeps his soul from troubles, Proverbs 21-23;
6. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison, James 3-8;
7. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell, James 3-6.

Today’s teaching is so important to all of us. And the Lord is set to deliver many of us from the crises and troubles that our tongues have brought on us. In continuing this teaching, we want to look at a critical aspect of tongues – the strife of tongues. If you look at Psalms 31:20, our main text for today, David, by the Holy Spirit, said, “You shall keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues”.
The truth here is this: The battle many of us are fighting today is the battle against tongues. We are either the ones using our tongues to scourge others or others are using their tongues to scourge us.
Note that the Bible calls Satan the accuser of the brethren; recall how he accused Job before God in Job 1.

“And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.” – Revelations 12-10.

Therefore, the spirit behind evil tongues or the tongues that scourge others is the devil, and never God. It is a very terrible and wicked spirit that has the potential to destroy lives and do all of the things I mentioned above — it destroys marriages; ministries; careers; nations, relationships. You must therefore take this matter very seriously. Let’s look at people or nations whose lives were messed up as a result of how they themselves used their tongues or how others used their tongues against them.

1. The strife of tongues made Jacob to inadvertently place a curse on his wife, Rachel, Genesis 31:32: “with whomever you find your gods, let him not live, or Jacob did not know that Rachel stole his father’s gods”. It appeared like nothing would happen. But in Genesis 35:18-19, Rachel died while giving birth to Benjamin;

2. The strife of tongues made Joseph to give a bad report about his brothers to his father, Genesis 37:2; this was the root of Joseph’s troubles and 13-year crises;

3. The strife of tongues made Portiphar’s wife to lie against Joseph, Genesis 39:16-19. This sent Joseph into the prison. For many of us, our tongues have sent many people into various prisons of hopelessness;

4. The strife of tongues made the Israelites to write themselves off and call themselves grasshoppers, Numbers 13:33 -Numbers 14:28. God said to them: as you have said in my ears so will I do to you, and all of them perished in the wilderness.

5. God was angry with Job’s friends for how they used their mouth. God just had mercy on them as He told them to offer sacrifices to Him so He would not judge them for not saying the right things about Him to Job; Job 42: 7-9;

6. The strife of tongues made Haman to speak evil of Mordecai to the king. Harman spoke evil about Mordecai to the King in Esther 3:8, but God turned things around and judged him for the evil things he said about the Israelites.

The list is endless. God wants us to take this matter of our tongues very seriously. A lot of us are suffering from the strife of tongues. You have either spoken evil about another person or another person has spoken evil about you. It goes beyond repentance. Sometimes you may need to restitute; call the person and apologise where possible; go back to the same people you spoke to and tell them that what you said is not true. My experience with a lady I had never met, who went out on social media to scandalise me comes to my mind.

Let’s look at some examples of evil words spoken by men that can potentially cause havoc:

1. Lying against people out of envy or bitterness just to bring them down, whether they have offended you or not;
2. Speaking negative words about yourself in difficult situations, such as: this problem will kill me; I don’t think I can make it; I am finished, etc.;
3. Cursing people who offend you or who leave you because you are anointed;
4. Speaking down on people to others because they appear to be more successful than you;
5. peaking evil of people publicly or privately on matters you know little or nothing about (But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves – Jude 1:10). Also look at 2 Peter 2:10, “and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. They are presumptuous, self-willed. They are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries.”

The list of evil that the tongue can do is endless. Hear what Isaiah says in Isaiah 33:14-15: The sinners in Zion are afraid; Fearfulness has seized the hypocrites:

“Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?” He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly.

Hear what Apostle Peter said to us in 1 Peter 3:10: “For He that will love life, And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips that they speak no guile”. Apparently, Peter is quoting from David in Psalm 34:12-13:

“Who is the man who desires life, And loves many days, that he may see good?

Keep your tongue from evil, And your lips from speaking deceit.”

KNOWING HIS VOICE ISN’T A MYSTERY

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me (John 10:27).

The Lord Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). Many wonder if it’s possible to hear God speak in a world where there’re so many voices. The words of the Master in John 10:2-5 clarify this. He said, “But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.”

The key is understanding God’s Word. The more you study the Word, the more you recognise and know the voice of God, because God and His Word are one. He speaks through His Word. Everything He tells you: every direction or guidance you receive from Him, always sides up with His Word. Through meditation on His Word, His voice becomes clearer to you, even in the midst of all the noise and distractions.

If you’ve hitherto found it difficult to recognize God’s voice, the solution is simple: spend more time studying the Word! Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom….” Proverbs 4:20-21 says, “My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.” If you keep the Word in your heart, you’ll hear the Word in your heart.

In addition, pray in the spirit often; pray in tongues. This helps to condition your spirit to discern God’s voice, visions and promptings.

Train Yourself To Recognize God’s Voice

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me (John 10:27).

There’re those who don’t believe God still talks to people today like He did in Bible days. So when they hear someone say, “God talked to me,” it beats their imagination. “Will God leave all the busy things He has to do, running all the planetary systems and so on, to talk to you?” they wonder. Well, the truth is God loves to talk to His children. He’s a master communicator who thinks you’re important enough for Him to talk to.

If you’ve never heard Him, maybe you’ve not been listening. It’s also possible that God could have been talking to you and you didn’t know it was Him. Remember the story of the little boy, Samuel. God called him three times, but he thought it was Eli the priest (1 Samuel 3:4-10). Why? Because you see, when God talks, He talks with the voice of a man, and a lot of times, He uses a familiar voice.

When Jesus spoke out of heaven Saul of Tarsus (who later became Paul), He called him by name and said “Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he (Saul) said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest…” (Acts 9:4-5). Jesus had a dialogue with Paul in the Hebrew tongue (Acts 26:14), a language that Paul understood.

God still talks to us today; in fact, He does every day! He can talk to you in a familiar voice, and in a language you understand. Start training yourself to recognize His voice. The more you study and familiarize yourself with God’s Word, the easier it is for you to recognize and respond when He speaks to you.

WHAT IS LOVE? (DAY 2)
God’s Unconditional Love For You –(Rhapsody of Realities)

But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him. Now that we are set right with God by means of this sacrificial death, the consummate blood sacrifice, there is no longer a question of being at odds with God in any way (Romans 5:8-9 MSG).

God’s love for you is unconditional, eternal and perfect. He’s not going to love you more when you get to heaven than He already does today. The Bible says “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Consequently, there’s nothing you could do today, having been born again, that’ll make God love you more or less, for His love for you is perfect, and you can’t improve on perfect.

Why I’m sharing this with you today? It’s so you can have faith and confidence in the Father’s unconditional love for you. He didn’t love you because you were so holy and never did anything wrong; He loves you because that’s His nature! As Pastor Chris often says, “He cannot “not” love you!” When you’re conscious and confident of the Father’s love for you, your faith will be more productive, for faith works by love (Galatians 5:6). More so, there’s no fear in love, for perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:18).

When some Christians make mistakes they find it difficult to accept that God would forgive them. So even after asking for His forgiveness, out of ignorance, they think God still holds their sin against them, and as a result, some have lost faith and have stopped going to church altogether. If you’re in such a situation you need to understand who God is; He is not a man, and He doesn’t count your sins against you because He loves you unconditionally.

Think about it: If God so loved you while you were yet a sinner, and sent Jesus to die for you, how much more will He shower His love on you now that you’ve received abundance of grace, and His wonderful gift of righteousness (Romans 5:17). Therefore, instead of wishing the world would come to an end because you did something wrong, just receive His forgiveness and continue in your journey of faith! 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all righteousness.”

You need to understand how God deals with His children when they make mistakes. A man might impose strict penalties on an offender, but God totally blots out all the records of your wrongs when you receive His forgiveness (Isaiah 1:18). He holds nothing against you. In fact, to Him, you never did anything wrong; you’re as perfect as Jesus is because your righteousness is the righteousness of Jesus Christ.

Prayer
Precious Father, how you have loved me unconditionally! I trust in your love and walk in the light of it today as you’re in the light. Hence, I know there’s therefore now no condemnation for me! I belong to you forever, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Isaiah 1:18
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

WHAT IS LOVE? (DAY 1)
TRAIN YOURSELF TO LOVE BY MWL. CHRIS NYAKI.

Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law (Romans 13:10).

Everyone deserves and qualifies to be loved, including those you may perceive to be “your enemies.” Jesus said, “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). You don’t only love those who love you; you love everyone with the unconditional love of Christ.

All people are the same when it comes to love. Everyone has the capacity to give and receive love. Everyone wants to be loved, though not everyone wants to give it or respond to it. Love is the greatest power in the universe. It goes beyond cultural divides, religious barriers, ethnic differences, and social stratifications.

Train yourself to walk in love. It’s a conscious choice you have to make; it’ll transform your life. In John 13:34, Jesus said, “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” Tell yourself, “I’m going to walk in love, no matter what. I’m going to love others genuinely, even when their actions aren’t deserving of love.”

The Bible tells us that God demonstrated His love for us, while we were undeserving of kindness: “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). We’re therefore to love like Him, as His beloved children: “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour” (Ephesians 5:1-2).

To walk with God is to walk in love. 1 John 4:7-8 says, “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” Let your life be the out-shining of His love.

CONFESSION
My life is the expression of the love of the Father. I abound in love today, towards those in my world, and beyond, and declare that my heart is established, blameless and in holiness before the Lord, for His love is perfected in me, in Jesus’ Name. Amen

WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT? (DAY ONE)
And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and
Standby), that He may remain with you forever (John 14:16 AMPC).

The Holy Spirit is not some smoke or cloud, nor is He a light. He’s not a thing! The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Godhead. This is because He’s the last of the Trinity to be known by us! In Genesis
1:1, God was introduced to us as “Elohim” (Hebrew). “Elohim” in Hebrew is plural for God.

We’re then told in the second verse that “the Spirit of God moved over the face of the deep.” Thus, even though the Holy Spirit is the first to be revealed from “Elohim,” He’s the last that we get acquainted with
because of what Jesus said to His disciples in John 14:16-17: “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world
cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”

The Holy Spirit is exactly like Jesus. He doesn’t receive power from God. In fact, He’s the POWER of God! He’s the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father. He’s not less than the Father, nor is He less than Jesus. If you went to heaven, you wouldn’t find the Holy Spirit outside the Father, for He’s in the Father.

On earth, His presence is everywhere! Everywhere you go as a child of God, the Holy Spirit goes with you and His presence rubs off on everything that’s connected with you. He doesn’t have a different name; “Holy Ghost” or “Holy Spirit” is a description of His
person, His character.

Jesus said, “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name…” (John 14:26). This simply implies that though the Holy Spirit has no name of His own, He answers to the Name of Jesus. Oh, so many things to show you about this awesome Personality! He’s the Beauty of heaven—our Comforter, Counsellor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener and Standby. Hallelujah! Learn more about Him from our book, “The Holy Spirit And You.”

CONFESSION

Blessed Holy Spirit, thank you for residing in me permanently. I recognize you as the One who guides me into all truth, teaching me to make the right choices and decisions that are consistent with God’s
perfect will for me. Hallelujah!

29/03/2024

Who is Holy Spirit ? (DAY 2)

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever (John 14:16).

The Holy Spirit is an extraordinary gift to us God’s children (Acts 2:38). He, in the parlance of computer science, is like the “downloader.” It takes the Holy Spirit to “download” heavenly files, and bring heavenly materiality into the human system.

He alone, for example, can help you accept the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, His sacrificial death, triumphant resurrection, and His glorious ascension into heaven. Only the Holy Spirit can convince you that the blood of Jesus Christ was adequate for the salvation of humanity. So when you find that you can understand and accept these spiritual realities, it means the Holy Spirit has unveiled them to you; He’s working in your life.

When Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do men say I am?” only Peter spoke rightly, and said, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). The Master’s response to Peter was, “…Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 16:17). Peter wasn’t guessing; he certainly didn’t know this in his head; the knowledge of who Jesus is was imparted to him by the Holy Spirit. There’re no human parameters that can help you comprehend spiritual realities.

Even in preaching and ministering salvation to others, you must understand that the Gospel that we’ve been given and charged to take to the nations of the world, is a Gospel that can’t be humanly explained and accepted. Consequently, we need the Holy Spirit to minister through us, and to help bring the understanding of the message to those to whom we minister. His help is inevitable in everything we do.

Never find yourself doing anything or building anything by your own natural strength or human wisdom; it’ll fail. Psalm 127:1 says, “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it….” Perhaps you’re a minister of the Gospel, don’t try to build the Church by your own strength; don’t rely on your natural abilities, for that alone won’t work. Depend on the Holy Spirit. Take advantage of His glorious ministry in your life. He’s in you to help you live the triumphant Christian life and be successful in all that you do, to the glory of the Father. He’s your indispensable Helper!
