Meru Animal Welfare Organization (MAWO) is a nonprofit animal-welfare organization working in Northern Tanzania. In 2010 MAWO undertook an initial baseline survey of the ten villages in the district to enhance the current animal welfare status in the area. The aim of this survey was to provide an empirical foundation for MAWO and to make strategic decisions involving the allocation of project reso

urces and the design of the project components. The organization was established in order to address the five freedoms of the animals, of which most farmers in the area are not aware:
1. Freedom from discomfort
3. Freedom from pain, injury and disease
4. Freedom from fear and distress
5. Freedom to express normal behavior

The organization operates mainly in Northern Tanzania in order to bring a lasting impact to the area before moving to other areas in Tanzania. The Headquarters are in USA River , Meru District, Arusha Region.

This Friday – World Donkey Day 🐴🌍
8th May 2026

This Friday, we celebrate the humble heroes who carry more than just loads—they carry livelihoods, hopes, and communities on their backs. Donkeys are the silent engines of rural life, supporting families, farmers, and businesses every single day.

For World Donkey Day on May 8, 2026, the focus remains on honoring the essential contributions of donkeys to human history, agriculture, and transportation. The day also emphasizes donkey welfare, protection, and raising awareness about their resilience—often highlighting their role as “unsung heroes” in supporting livelihoods and daily life.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate their strength, resilience, and loyalty. They deserve kindness, proper care, and respect for the incredible role they play in our world.

We’re proud to share another milestone from MAWO! 🎉🐴

A total of 29 Donkey Champions have successfully completed training on how to make proper, safe harnesses for working donkeys within their communities. This is a big step forward in improving the welfare and wellbeing of these hardworking animals who support so many livelihoods.

By equipping local champions with practical skills, we are creating lasting change—ensuring donkeys are treated with care, respect, and compassion every day.

🙏 A heartfelt thank you to our amazing supporters SPANA for making this possible. Your support continues to empower communities and protect animals where it matters most.

Together, we are making a difference.

World Water Day is March 22

In the communities we serve, water isn’t just essential for people, it is life-saving for the working animals families depend on every day.

Donkeys walk miles under the sun carrying water, food, and supplies. Without access to clean water, they become weak, injured, and unable to work, putting entire households at risk.

That is why, over the years, we have funded water troughs in rural villages, giving these animals a place to rest, drink, and recover.

But water is only part of the story.

When an animal is sick, injured, or exhausted, access to water alone is not enough. They need care.

Our 4x4 mobile clinic will allow us to reach animals directly in these remote areas, providing treatment, prevention, and education right where it is needed most.

With just days left in our campaign, we are so close to making this a reality.

If you have ever believed that every animal deserves both water and care, this is your moment to help.

Donate today and help us bring life-saving support into the field.

I’m incredibly grateful to all my amazing friends who joined me in running the 21km at the Kilimanjaro International Marathon 🏃‍♂️

A heartfelt thank you not only to those who ran alongside me, but also to all the friends and supporters who contributed through your generous donations. Even if you couldn’t be there physically, you were part of every step of this journey 🙏

Your support, energy, and kindness mean so much—not just to me, but to a bigger mission. Together, we are raising funds to help complete and put our mobile clinic on the ground, so we can reach and support more animals and communities in need.

This is more than just a run—it’s a step towards real impact. Thank you all for believing in this cause and being part of the journey 💙

Let’s keep going, together

At MAWO, we believe that the future of animal welfare begins with education. 🐾📚

This week, our team continued visiting primary schools to educate young students about kindness, respect, and proper care for animals. By teaching children at an early age, we are helping to build a generation that understands the importance of protecting and caring for animals.

Through action and education, we are working together to create a better and more compassionate world for animals and people alike.

We’re so close!

With just 10 days left, we’re in the final stretch of our campaign to raise $5,000 to fund our 4×4 mobile veterinary clinic. Thanks to your incredible support, we’ve already raised over $3,700 - which means we’re just a little over $1,000 away from the finish line.

This clinic is already on its way and will be arriving by the end of the month, but we still need to raise the remaining funds to equip it with life-saving veterinary supplies and equipment so our team can reach animals out in the field who otherwise would never receive care.

Every dollar helps our team go the extra mile - literally - to treat dogs, donkeys, and other animals who need it most.

Now is the moment to help us cross the finish line.
