A youth development organisation, focusing on education and life skills for disadvantaged young people in Arusha, Northern Tanzania.

Umoja is a youth development organisation located in the city of Arusha, Northern Tanzania, East Africa. We administer a free holistic educational and support programme specifically designed for disadvantaged young adults who have fallen out of the formal education system. The programme consists of a Foundation Year during which students are instructed in English, IT and Life Skills. They are also

given access to information and resources which help them to care for their physical and emotional wellbeing. Once they have successfully completed the Foundation Year, students become part of the Outplacement Scheme whereby they are placed into the mainstream education system or vocational training. Umoja then supports its students through job applications into new careers which will allow them to provide effectively for themselves and their families. Umoja is partnered in Australia with Global Development Group. GDG (ABN 57 102 400 993), as an Australian DFAT approved NGO takes responsibility of the project according to DFAT rules – providing a governance role and assisting in the areas of planning, monitoring, evaluating and auditing to ensure the project is carried out to Australian requirements. International Youth Day 2026: Different Contexts, Common Aspirations

Yesterday, Umoja Tanzania joined more than 1,000 young people in Kisongo, Arusha, to commemorate International Youth Day under this year’s theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.”

We were honoured to welcome our guest speakers, Deputy Director Suzana Makene and Youth Development Officer Agatha Andrew Mwakalebela from Arusha District Council, who encouraged young people to believe in themselves and reminded them that the education they are receiving today is a pathway to a brighter future. With hard work, focus and determination, they can achieve their dreams and become whoever they aspire to be.

Youth from Einoth, Yakini and Loovilukuny Secondary Schools joined us for a day filled with learning, fun and inspiration. They took part in life skills, counselling, and sexual and reproductive health sessions, as well as football, netball and volleyball. They also enjoyed traditional dances beautifully presented by Umoja Tanzania.

We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to everyone who joined us in making this special day meaningful for young people.

A very big thank you to ELMA for supporting us in organising this wonderful event and for continuing to invest in the dreams and potential of young people.

From Classroom to the Wild!

Meriana is one of our Umoja outplacement youth, studying Tour Guiding at Arusha Wisdom College. Every Friday, she explores forests, national parks, and other places as part of her practical learning.

These real-world experiences help her turn theory into practical skills and bring her closer to her dream of becoming a professional tour guide.

Last week, Mr. Huruma and Mr. Ben visited Twende Organisation, which empowers people to solve community challenges through creativity, innovation, and hands-on technology.

They had a constructive discussion about the Young Innovators Programme at Umoja Tanzania. A heartfelt thank you to Ben for organising this meaningful conversation and helping to build connections that will support the growth of our young innovators.

Learning from One Another

Last week, we were delighted to welcome seven visitors from America to Umoja Centre!

They enjoyed a tour of Umoja and spent time with our youth in a fun cultural exchange session. Together, they asked questions, shared stories, and learned about each other's cultures, creating meaningful connections and lasting memories.

STRONG FAMILIES BUILD STRONG COMMUNITIES. On 11 July, Umoja Tanzania held a parents' training session in Oloigeruno Village, Arusha District. It was a wonderful opportunity for parents to come together, learn, and encourage one another.

During the training, parents explored entrepreneurship and learned how village community banks (VICOBA) can help them strengthen their businesses, improve their family income, and support one another financially. We also shared an important reminder that while working hard to provide for their families is essential, spending quality time with their children and giving them love, guidance, and care is just as important.

A big thank you to Nuru Basyagile (community development officer) Francis and Ms. Chuki for leading this productive training, and to all the parents who took the time to attend, learn, and invest in their families' future.

Frank and His Tour Company. 👏🌟

Frank joined Umoja in 2015 dreaming of becoming a great tour guide. He started in the foundation programme as a beginner and later completed a Tour Guide studies at Tropical Institute.

He is a focused and ambitious young man, raised by a single mother who always dreamed of seeing a brighter future for her first born. Today, Frank has started his own tour company, Babaadventure Safari a dream that has come true. He is now supporting his family and community, and we are very proud of the steps he has made to achieve his goals.

We are warmly grateful to Sarah and Graham, (his sponsors) who held his hand through his education journey. We could not have done it without their kindness.

Our new foundation students are enjoying simple games that help them build communication and teamwork skills while having fun together. It’s always great to see them learning, sharing, and growing as a team in such a natural way.
