You learn a lot about a team when a lion walks past.

Our team spent the day at the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and it was exactly what we needed. Lions, elephants, buffaloes, and a team that couldn't stop talking; exchaning ideas, telling stories and appreciating the ecosystems right on our doorstep.

Oliver from the Berlin team joined us too, and the conversations were as rich as the landscapes around us.

It's safe to say we're all looking forward to the next team buildng session 💙

Cohort 3 has officially come full circle.

After one month of campus engagement, Hub Manager training, and an intensive founders bootcamp, our student founders pitched their ventures on 29th April at Holiday Inn.

On 30th April, we gathered at Johari Rotana with the Funguo Tanzania team, StartHub Africa, partners and guests to celebrate the finalists. Even though we have concluded this portion of the programme, the journey continues with follow-up mentorship and ongoing engagement with the founders.

Congratulations to our grand winners:
🔹 Gazelle Couture - Dorcas Yepheson Swalo
🔹 Bio Formulation Green - Juma Mtumwa Haji
🔹 Senda by Mifumo Labs - Wilson Mathias Magesa
🔹 Kiss Me Later - Gladness Faustine Mungo
🔹 Smart Scheduler - Ng'walimu Lameck Lazaro
🔹 DHK Bio Akemi - Leonard Mnyema

This cohort showed what’s possible when students are given structure, mentorship and belief.

To every student who applied, every Hub Manager who supported, and every founder who stood up to pitch, we’re proud of you.

Even though this chapter has closed, we’re staying close to the founders as they refine, grow, and take their next steps 💙

The best innovation hubs are successful because of the Hub Managers running them. Shoutout to all of them, doing the work behind the scenes.

The reality of running a university innovation hub involves grant reporting, student recruitment, forming strategic partnerships, and trying to coach a founder through their first pitch while managing a budget spreadsheet.

This week, Hub Managers from 7 universities across Tanzania spent 3 days together in Dar es Salaam working through exactly that.

Together with Starthub, we hosted practical sessions on:
• Managing operations
• Tacking funding
• Building partnerships
• Telling your impact story
• Keeping the hub financially sustainable

The Hub Managers are the ones student founders turn to first. They are the ones wearing multiple different hats, keeping the show running.

Thank you Pamela, Isaack Shayo, Rehema Laizer, Rejoice Haule, and Gideon Mlawa for sharing your expertise.

Honest confession: most of us know climate change is serious. Fewer of us can explain exactly how it all connects.

Earlier this month, Julien Hederer from Climate Fresk came to spend an afternoon with us at Westerwelle Startup Haus Arusha.

A workshop, cards on a table and a group of people trying to map out how deforestation leads to flooding, how fossil fuels connect to biodiversity loss, how one thing pulls another.

It was clarifying to see the whole chain laid out visually in front of us. Complexity doesn't feel so overwhelming when you can point to it.

The session was a good reminder that the responsibility doesn't sit somewhere far away, but with us.

Thanks Julien for facilitating. We left with a lot to think about 🙏

April has been a busy month for our team. In just a few weeks, we delivered Cohort 3 info sessions and needs assessments across 7 universities, reaching 840+ students across Tanzania.

We showed up at universities to introduce the programme and to listen. We wanted to understand what innovation hubs on campuses actually need to better support their student founders.

Across Arusha Technical College (ATC)., Sumait University, SAUT, Ardhi University (ARU), MUHAS, Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST), and St. Joseph University, we engaged with hundreds of students, some students showed up even while on holiday.

In total, we reached well over 800 students through physical information sessions and conducted needs assessments. Since applications opened at the beginning of April, we’ve already received 500+ applications from student founders building real ventures.

Next up: a Hub Managers workshop to strengthen university innovation centres, followed by a fully-funded 5-day residential bootcamp from 25 - 30 April in Dar es Salaam for the top 30 selected student-led ventures.

This is part of the UNDP Funguo Tanzania Innovation Programme, backed by the European Union, Finnish Embassy in Tanzania, and UK International Development.

The hub was buzzing with the right type of energy last week as we hosted our first Community Demo Day. Everyone showed up ready to share their work and create connections with the people they share the space with.

After a short intro and an icebreaker, everyone got moving with the simple goal to talk to as many people as possible sharing what they do, what problems they're solving, and what they're looking for next.

We heard from Caudence Ayoti, Omega Seyongwe, and Najma Matengo, and then the conversations carried on in different corners of the hub. It was inspiring to see the curiosity and the questions that pushed the conversations forward.

By the end, we had a better understanding of what everyone does beyond just sharing a space.

If you’ve been thinking about joining a community of entrepreneurs, this is a good time. New members can claim up to 20% off before April 30 for long term memberships.

Come build with us 💙
