Lights. Camera. Africa!
AFRISOS goes behind the scenes of a proud milestone as we land on the cover of Selamta Magazine, the in-flight magazine of Ethiopian Airlines.

Featuring our founder, Jigar Ganatra this moment celebrates something bigger than a cover: the sheer determination of local storytellers to raise our voices and be seen for who we are. To express ourselves unapologetically and correct the misrepresentation of Africa.

“African storytellers already have the stories. Now it’s time to co-create and inspire the world.”

Happy New Year 2976! 🌾🎉
While much of the world celebrates the New Year on the Gregorian calendar, Amazigh communities across North Africa mark time differently.
Their calendar begins in 950 BCE, when King Sheshonq I ascended to the throne of Egypt making the Amazigh calendar 950 years ahead.

Yennayer, the Amazigh New Year, marks the start of the agricultural season. Families gather to share traditional meals, sometimes hiding nuts for luck, while singing, telling stories, and honoring the land and the seasons.

Our AFRISOS film “Chameleon Corridors” has had an overwhelming success this year! Reconnecting Tanzanian audiences with a creature they fear… We brought the chameleon closer to them, safely through the screen, with a strong personality and a familiar voice of Oni Sigalla.

This style of storytelling challenges the standard of the Western wildlife filmmaking where anthropomorphisation is a big no-go, but it worked for our audience at home, because this is how African traditional communities tell their wildlife stories too. Animals, trees and even rocks and wind have soul and spirit… and so we used this film to not only create a film to engage African audiences but also to allow ourselves to tell the stories the way we always did.

A drum that can talk? How is that even possible? 🥁

The Dùndún, as the Yoruba call it, is an hour-shaped traditional percussion instrument from West Africa. It can mimic the tone and rhythm of human speech, allowing skilled drummers to “talk” through sound.

Held under one arm, the player squeezes and releases the leather cords along its sides to change the pitch transforming beats into meaningful phrases and messages.

For generations, it has been used to praise kings, send messages across villages, call communities to action, and mark important ceremonies. Isn’t that fascinating?
