The World Health Organization has designated September 17 as World Patient Safety Day and has advocated lighting iconic buildings worldwide in orange to symbolize countries' commitment to achieving universal health coverage. In 2026, the Tri-Service General Hospital building in Taiwan will be illuminated in orange to represent these efforts.
As a leading national medical center and the cornerstone of the Armed Forces’ healthcare system, Tri-Service General Hospital traces its origins back to military medical facilities established during the Japanese colonial era. The hospital’s journey in Taiwan began in 1946 when it took over the South Gate Ward of the Taiwan Army Hospital, before being officially reorganized as the Tri-Service General Hospital in 1967. The early architecture adopted American hospital layouts, featuring patient wards radiating outward from a central nursing station, which significantly enhanced management and care efficiency. In 2000, the hospital relocated to the Neihu Campus, marking a comprehensive upgrade of healthcare services - including improvements in space, technology, workflow, and continuity of care.
In response to an aging society, the hospital actively promotes long-term monitoring and multidisciplinary integrated care for chronic conditions, enhancing the quality and accessibility of care for major noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Furthermore, utilizing its rigorous military-style approach and swift mobility, the hospital promptly activates emergency medical responses during major disasters and pandemics, serving as a central hub for national medical resilience and exemplifying the deep integration of military and civilian healthcare systems. As the featured landmark for the 2026 light-up initiative, the hospital not only demonstrates its role as a protective shield safeguarding public health in peacetime and stabilizing society during crises but also strongly aligns with World Patient Safety Day’s commitment to safe care for noncommunicable diseases.
