📍❓Unraveling the Mantra of the Heart Sutra

“Therefore, one should know that the Prajna-Paramita (Perfection of Wisdom) is the great divine mantra…the unequalled mantra…”
Is the Heart Sutra fundamentally a sutra, or is it also a mantra?
Why does the Heart Sutra, which expounds the Mahāyāna doctrine of emptiness and prajna (wisdom), contain a mantra?
What is the relationship between the mantra of the Heart Sutra and the teaching of emptiness in prajna?
How should Buddhist practitioners regard and cultivate this teaching in their practice?

🔔Chan Meditation Center Hosts a Seven-Day Young People Retreat, Guiding Them to Relax and Recharge

From May 23–30, 2026, a Seven-Day Young People Retreat organized by Chan Meditation Center (CMC) concluded successfully at Bodhi Monastery in New York. During a pivotal time when many young people in North America are occupied with summer internships, graduation, job hunting, and planning for their future, participants set aside seven days from their busy schedules to immerse themselves in Chan meditation. Through this experience, they learned how to better connect with themselves and hoped to bring greater clarity, peace, and inner strength back into their daily lives, thereby enabling them to face future challenges with stability and peace.

Throughout the seven-day retreat, through video teachings by Dharma Drum Mountain founder, Master Sheng Yen, CMC guided participants step by step from theory to practice, helping them gradually develop a comprehensive and systematic understanding of Chan meditation. Participants gained clearer understanding of how to use meditation methods to calm the body and mind and to cope with worries and stress.

🔔Chan Meditation Center Holds Special Event “Bathing the Buddha, Purifying the Mind” to Share in the Buddha’s Blessings

On May 10 (Eastern Time), Dharma Drum Mountain Chan Meditation Center in New York held a special Buddha Bathing Festival event titled “Bathing the Buddha, Purifying the Mind” to celebrate the Buddha’s Birthday. 🙏More than 170 participants from both Eastern and Western backgrounds gathered to take part in the occasion. During the Buddha Bathing Ceremony, the assembly respectfully and wholeheartedly chanted praises to the Three Jewels. Amid the recitation of “Namo ben shi shi jia mo ni fo (homage to our original teacher, Shakyamuni Buddha),” participants paid homage to the Buddha in turn and poured fragrant water over the statue of Prince Siddhartha. Through the ritual of bathing the Buddha, participants purified their bodies and minds, cleansed away afflictions and mental defilements, and made vows to “eliminate all evils, cultivate all virtues, and liberate all sentient beings,” praying to attain the same purity of body and mind as the Buddha. Chan Meditation Center also extended blessings to mothers everywhere for peace and well-being, while praying for world peace, harmony, and the swift attainment of Buddhahood by all beings.

🔔Dharma Drum Mountain Rings the Lotus Bell 108 Times to Welcome the Lunar New Year, Praying for World Peace🙏

February 16, 2026, is the last day of the year according to Lunar calendar, known as Lunar New Year’s Eve for Chinese-speaking people. On this night, Buddhist temples and monasteries traditionally strike their great bell 108 times to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new one.🧧In Buddhism, it is believed that human beings have 108 kinds of mental afflictions. Thus, each of the 108 bell tolls on Lunar New Year’s Eve symbolizes the removal of afflictions from the past, present, and future.

Beginning at 9:30 p.m. (Taiwan time) on February 16, 2026, the Abbot President of Dharma Drum Mountain, Venerable Guo Huei (果暉法師), together with prominent figures and honored guests from all sectors of Taiwanese society, will strike the Lotus Bell 108 times and deliver a Dharma talk, praying for the happiness and peace of all sentient beings in the coming year and for world peace.🙏

For those unable to attend the Lunar New Year’s Eve bell-ringing ceremony in person, a live online broadcast will be available, thereby allowing viewers to listen to the bell tolls and receive blessings from wherever they are. We warmly welcome your participation.
