The professional academic seminar was honored to feature Dr. Daniel Nyfeler, Managing Director of the Gubelin Gem Lab, and Director Kelly Liu, General Manager of KELLY Gems, as the keynote speakers. Their insightful presentations sparked enthusiastic discussions among association chairs and industry leaders. By exploring innovative approaches to gemstone legacy and sustainability, the speakers provided collectors and dealers with constructive frameworks for systematic management, alongside rigorous standards for authentication and provenance tracking. The vibrant atmosphere carried over into the post-event banquet, where the visiting scholars were deeply moved by the hospitality of the major association chairpersons from Northern Taiwan. This cross-sector engagement vividly demonstrated the synergy between Taiwan’s jewelry industry and the academic community. Dr. Nyfeler highly commended the Chinese Straits Jewelry Exchange Association, describing it as a well-organized, vibrant, and professionally cohesive group.
The coordination and hosting of our international guests were facilitated by Director Riki Lo of Empire Intellectual Property Translation Agency. As a Chinese-Canadian who grew up in Vancouver, Director Lo has an extensive track record of providing professional translation, interpretation, and editorial services for Taiwan’s top-tier government agencies, including the Judicial Yuan, Executive Yuan, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Tourism Administration, and the Taiwan Railway Corporation. Under the guidance of Chairman Lin Sung-Shan, Director Lo utilized his expertise in managing international symposia to bridge cultural gaps and engage in a high-level dialogue with Dr. Nyfeler.
Their exchange covered a remarkably diverse range of topics:
1. Cross-Cultural Analysis: An exploration of regional linguistic nuances in Switzerland and Canada, providing our guests with an objective North American perspective on Taiwan’s historical evolution.
2. Industry Insights: Addressing Dr. Nyfeler’s inquiries regarding the practicalities of Taiwan’s jewelry market and trading environment.
3. E-commerce Operations: Using "Empire Jewelry" as a case study to share operational data, including conversion rates, return policies in Taiwan, trending items, and transaction benchmarks.
4. Cultural Observations: A fascinating discussion on how Chinese-Canadians and Europeans perceive Taiwan’s traditional Feng Shui and metaphysical culture.
5. Life Journeys: A collaborative learning session centered on Director Kelly Liu’s experiences, navigating high-pressure international environments with innovation and resilience while securing pivotal business deals.
During these informal yet profound discussions on the definition of a gemologist, focusing on heritage versus innovation, the scholars gained a deeper appreciation for the multifaceted roles of gemologists and collectors across different cultures.
We would like to express our profound gratitude to Chairman Lin Sung-Shan for his lifelong dedication to nurturing Taiwan’s jewelry industry, as well as to the entire team for orchestrating such a warm and professional academic gathering. Our thanks also go to Dr. Nyfeler and Director Kelly Liu for their invaluable insights. This event allowed our international guests to experience firsthand the vital role our Association plays in connecting academia with industry, showcasing the dynamic vitality of Taiwan’s jewelry sector to the world.
