On this 80th anniversary of VJ Day and the end of World War II, we pause to remember all the former prisoners of war and veterans who have fought, suffered, and sacrificed their lives to give us the freedom we all cherish today.
We also honor and remember not only the former prisoners of war who were held at Kinkaseki and other POW camps across Taiwan, but also the veterans of all the conflicts of the past century — and those who are still fighting and dying today in the hope of bringing peace to our troubled world. Let us not forget them on this special day.
The service began with an opening prayer, followed by messages from representatives of the Commonwealth and Allied nations, as well as from the ROC veterans’ associations. Moving tributes were also shared by POW family members and friends who traveled from afar to Taiwan to honor the bravery and memory of their fathers and grandfathers. The ceremony concluded with the laying of wreaths — a solemn symbol of remembrance and gratitude.
