Brief Introduction to His Eminence Gyaltsab Rinpoche
Choktul Gyaltsab Tseten Dorjee Rinpoche was born into the Anye Pontsang family—a lineage originating from the pure Luminous Gods, the faultless Khon clan, and the Wal-shul chieftain lineage. He was recognized and enthroned as the unmistakable mind-emanation of the Palyul Gyaltsab, Kyabje Gonsung Rinpoche, who is renowned as the reincarnation of Pema Lhundrub Gyatso (the second throne-holder of the Eastern Palyul tradition) and an emanation of Sogpo Lhapal, one of Guru Rinpoche’s twenty-five primary disciples. This recognition was formally conferred by Kyabje Thubten Palzang Rinpoche—the great illuminator of the teachings of the Eastern Palyul tradition and the holder of the treasury of the Early Translation K**a and Terma teachings—along with prayers that his vast activities for the doctrine and sentient beings may be effortlessly and spontaneously fulfilled.
The previous Palyul Gyaltsab Gonsung Rinpoche was a direct disciple of Drubwang Palchen D**a and Khenchen Ngagi Wangpo, and performed numerous deeds beneficial to the teachings of the Heart Essence (Nyingthig). Auspicious enthronement blessings were bestowed upon the present Rinpoche by Kyabje Mugsang Kuchen Rinpoche, the head of Namling, who presented him with a Pandita hat featuring the three-fold binding (pan-zhwa thig-gsum), a ritual drum and bell (da-dril), and representations of body, speech, and mind. Furthermore, Kyabje Kathok Getse Rinpoche, the seventh supreme head of the Early Translation Nyingma tradition, offered auspicious scarves and prayers for his long life.
From ancient times to the present day, the noble Khon lineage—to which Gyaltsab Rinpoche belongs—has continuously produced kings, ministers, and renowned scholars and Siddhas, and is widely recognized as a lineage that serves as a treasure-blessing for Tibet. In particular, regarding his paternal household and heritage: Since the nomadic Black-Tent (Sbra-nag) community has historically been a primary site and key assembly of disciples for propagating the Longchen Nyingthig teachings of Drubwang Palchen D**a, Rinpoche himself personally served as leader and founded the dra-nag Monastery, Thegchen Samten Odsal Ling, as a sanctuary for practicing the Longchen Nyingthig tradition. Moreover, the Amyen family has continuously served as leaders of both the Dra-Nag community and monastery, as regents or representatives of Palyul Monastery, and as district administrators (Dzongpon), thus shouldering immense responsibilities in both spiritual and secular domains.
Rinpoche joined the monastic at the age of nine. He studied the sacred Dharma at Namdroling Monastery, the great Early Translation Nyingma seat in South India, and relied upon Kyabje Drubwang Pema Norbu Rinpoche as his root guru. From Kyabje Drubwang Pema Norbu Rinpoche and numerous other sublime masters, he received countless profound teachings, including the empowerments, scriptural transmissions, and oral instructions of the Nyingma K**a and Terma traditions, as well as the cycle of teachings pertaining to the Dzogchen Instruction Class (Men-ngag-de). Kyabje Drubwang Pema Norbu Rinpoche always held him in exceptionally high regard and personally dispatched him to Taiwan with specific charges to spread and flourish the precious teachings of the Buddha.
Following precisely the instructions laid down in the practice manuals for retreat and accomplishment (nyen-drub), he has repeatedly completed countless numerical and temporal retreats on the vast assemblies of yidams and supreme deities—primarily focusing on the Three Roots of the Nyingma tradition—flowing continuously like a river, and has dedicated himself single-mindedly to the practice of the heart-essence of the holy Dharma. Furthermore, Rinpoche has continuously performed—and continues to perform—numerous profoundly beneficial activities, including religious events tailored to the mental inclinations and capacities of his disciples, as well as essential social services and humanitarian efforts to benefit all living beings.
