🌊 World Ocean Day 2026 | Reimagining Our Relationship with the Ocean
Every year, World Ocean Day is celebrated on 8 June. In 2026, under the United Nations theme “Reimagine,” the world is invited to rethink how we see, use, and protect our ocean.
Let’s take a look at how countries across Europe are marking World Ocean Day:
🇬🇧 United Kingdom | Through family-friendly museum activities, World Ocean Week, beach clean-ups, and marine education, the UK is encouraging broader public engagement in ocean conservation.
🇮🇪 Ireland | A World Ocean Day forum is being held to focus on the designation, management, and cross-sector collaboration of marine protected areas.
🇳🇱 Netherlands | A national ocean science conference is bringing together research, policy, and industry to advance ocean knowledge and innovation.
🇮🇹 Italy | One Ocean Week in Milan features talks, workshops, and family activities, bringing the ocean closer to urban communities.
🇵🇹 Portugal | Oeiras Ocean Days promotes dialogue on ocean innovation, the blue economy, marine science, and sustainable development.
🇫🇷 France | Building on the outcomes of the United Nations Ocean Conference, France is focusing on high seas protection, biodiversity, pollution control, and the decarbonisation of shipping.
🇧🇪 Belgium / European Union | In Brussels, European Ocean Days and Digital Ocean Week are strengthening European ocean governance and digital ocean cooperation.
🇳🇴 Norway | One Ocean Week in Bergen connects research, education, industry, and civil society to advocate for the sustainable use of the ocean.
🇬🇷 Greece | With a focus on Mediterranean marine systems and the climate crisis, Greece is promoting ocean stewardship through campus and community initiatives.
🇪🇸 Spain | Through ocean film festivals and family-friendly activities, Spain is using the power of film and culture to raise awareness of marine conservation.
The ocean is not only a natural resource. It is deeply connected to climate adaptation, biodiversity, food security, shipping, energy, tourism, and international trade. For businesses, protecting the ocean also means building more responsible supply chains, more resilient industries, and a more forward-looking approach to sustainable transformation.
Every October, the European Chamber of Commerce Taiwan brings its members together for a beach clean-up initiative, contributing in our own way to the protection of Taiwan’s marine ecosystems.
On World Ocean Day, let us reimagine together.
🌍 Europe’s experience reminds us that ocean conservation is not the responsibility of any single country, but a shared global mission.
Let us work together to promote a sustainable blue economy and leave a healthier, more resilient ocean for future generations.
