【Call for Participation】Digital Humanities Hackathon: LLMs Automated Timeline Extraction from a Multilingual Corpus (Deadline: July 21, 2026)

High-tech challenges call for collective intelligence.

This September, CEFC Taipei will welcome Marie Bizais-Lillig for a two-week research residency, with the support of the Bureau Français de Taipei.

During her stay, the distam+ Digital Humanities Consortium (Paris), in collaboration with CEFC Taipei and the Bureau Français de Taipei, will organize a hackathon simultaneously in Taipei and Paris.

The aim of this hackathon is to benchmark the capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) to decipher chronologies and temporal information within a multilingual corpus, including texts in Chinese, English and French, as well as historical and regional variants of these languages.

International Workshop on Negotiating Mobilities and Borders in Digitalising and Globalising Asia: Day 1

On the first day of the workshop, five presenters shared their papers, including Prof. Hong Po-Yi, who also offered a behind-the-scenes look at his second manuscript, which will be published in July.

The discussions enriched scholarly debates on oceanic globalization, the role of the state in disseminating ideas of kinship, how migrants leverage digital technologies, and the collaboration between local and migrant workers in Taiwan’s agricultural sector. Every presentation was insightful and thought-provoking.

By tracing the migration of Taiwanese tea, Prof. Po-Yi’s forthcoming book explores how tea has transformed the everyday practices of Taiwanese communities in Thailand. It also sheds light on debates surrounding food nationalism and perceptions of quality between locally produced and imported tea.

Taken together, the first day of the workshop provided stimulating discussions that encouraged us to rethink conventional narratives of mobility and borders.

This workshop was organized under the FORSEA/ORCHID Project, Global Mobilities in the Digital Age (NSTC/Campus France), in collaboration with CNRS/CEFC, IRASEC, and the Department of Geography at National Taiwan University, under the leadership of Prof. Hong Po-Yi and Dr. Beatrice Zani.

New publication!

CEFC Taipei is very pleased to announce the publication of Taiwanese Horror Cinema in the 21st Century: Spectral Narratives and Screen Culture by Corrado Neri, Director of CEFC Taipei, with Anthem Press.

The book explores contemporary Taiwanese horror and ghost cinema through questions of memory, identity, folklore, q***r representation, digital imaginaries, and the changing forms of screen culture.

CEFC Taipei Talk: Migration infrastructure and post-pandemic technological innovations

Recent years have seen scholars turning their attention to the increased use of digital technologies to coordinate migratory (and tourism) flows. At the heart of these enhancements is a quest for even greater speed at airports, and a desire to unlock newfound capabilities in Big Data. At present, a panoply of post-pandemic solutions exist, ranging from app-based applications, to QR code-mediated border crossings, to token-less travel. This talk will sketch out the logics of these various innovations, and consider their downstream implications on migrants. In particular, international borders now implicitly enlist the work of crossers to prove their regularity by surrendering more and more intimate (or sometimes suggestive) information about themselves. The outcome is a splintering of groups by convenience through these self-sorting procedures, both leaning on old divisions of race, nationality and purpose of travel, and also enrolling the help of migrants to stoke the imagination of their own (in)security.

Weiqiang Lin is Associate Professor at the Department of Geography, National University of Singapore. Trained as a socio-cultural geographer, his research interests revolve around issues of mobilities and the infrastructures of moving. He has over ten years of experience researching on contemporary mobility issues, including in migration and transport. Weiqiang sits on the editorial boards of Dialogues in Human Geography, Digital Geography & Society, Journal of Transport Geography, Mobilities, and Mobility Humanities (also Advisory Board), and is a Section Editor for Transfers (Ideas in Motion). He is currently working on a personal monograph titled Atmospheric Labor with the Temple University Press.

CEFC Talk: Florence Padovani (Director of the CEFC) "What Does Hong Kong Intangible Heritage Tell Us About the Relationship between Hong Kong and the Mainland?"

In Hong Kong, as in mainland China, collective memory is primarily mediated through official narratives. The narrative of Hong Kong’s past is especially sensitive, and the recent history museum exhibit is a clear example of a top‑down construction as an official story. While some scholars use a discursive approach to analyze such processes, this presentation focuses instead on living cultural heritage in contemporary Hong Kong, using primaraily fieldworks in Hong Kong New Territories.

Using the Hakka unicorn dance as a case study, I adopt a bottom‑up analysis to examine how memory and tradition are transmitted, and how communities adapt their practices for new uses. This process is closely tied to struggles for recognition and the construction of emerging identities.

Florence PADOVANI is currently the Director of the CEFC (French Centre for Research on Contemporary China 法國現代中國研究中心). She has been doing intensive research in Mainland China and Hong Kong for a couple of decades. Her main research themes are: Intangible cultural heritage in Hong Kong and Mainland, Internal migrations, the social impacts of Shanghai and Xi’an urban developments and the social impacts of the Three Gorges Dam.
