Suite à la Journée jeunes chercheurs CEFC-EFEO 2026, organisée lundi 27 avril à l’Academia Sinica, RTI – Radio Taïwan International consacre deux épisodes à cette belle journée d’échanges.

L’occasion de revenir, en deux formats courts d’environ 15 minutes, sur les présentations, les discussions et la richesse des travaux partagés tout au long de la journée.

CEFC Talk: Florence Padovani (Director of the CEFC) "What Does Hong Kong Intangible Heritage Tell Us About the Relationship between Hong Kong and the Mainland?"

In Hong Kong, as in mainland China, collective memory is primarily mediated through official narratives. The narrative of Hong Kong’s past is especially sensitive, and the recent history museum exhibit is a clear example of a top‑down construction as an official story. While some scholars use a discursive approach to analyze such processes, this presentation focuses instead on living cultural heritage in contemporary Hong Kong, using primaraily fieldworks in Hong Kong New Territories.

Using the Hakka unicorn dance as a case study, I adopt a bottom‑up analysis to examine how memory and tradition are transmitted, and how communities adapt their practices for new uses. This process is closely tied to struggles for recognition and the construction of emerging identities.

Florence PADOVANI is currently the Director of the CEFC (French Centre for Research on Contemporary China 法國現代中國研究中心). She has been doing intensive research in Mainland China and Hong Kong for a couple of decades. Her main research themes are: Intangible cultural heritage in Hong Kong and Mainland, Internal migrations, the social impacts of Shanghai and Xi’an urban developments and the social impacts of the Three Gorges Dam.

NTU Conference : Precarity at Sea: Migrant Labour, Deregulation, and the Global Fish Supply Chain

In this lecture, I examine the globalized labor regime of the fish supply chain through the experiences of Southeast Asian migrant workers on foreign-flagged fishing vessels. Based on ethnographic research in Taiwan, Singapore, and Indonesia, I explore how labor emerges within and reinforces overlapping ‘gray zones’ of circulation, work, and deregulation. These ambiguous spaces facilitate exploitative conditions marked by racialized hierarchies, mobility restrictions, and socio-economic inequalities. While employers and recruiters exploit these regulatory gaps to maximize profits and control labor, migrant workers also navigate and reshape these structures to secure limited socio-economic opportunities. I situate these findings within debates on labor precarity and global supply chains, extending Kimberly Hoang’s Spiderweb Capitalism to show how the fish supply chain operates through informal practices and regulatory loopholes. I argue that these globalized labor regimes blur the boundaries between legality and illegality, formality and informality, creating precarious and shifting workspaces in contemporary Asian capitalism.

Speakers

Beatrice Zani is a sociologist and an ethnographer, permanent researcher at French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS)/ French Center for Research on Contemporary China (CEFC Taipei). Drawing on the case study of transnational labor in the Asian fishing and shipping sectors (China, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia), her ongoing research explores the link between labor and commodity mobilities, global work and supply chains, informality and digitality in the transformation of capitalism and globalization. She’s the PI of the French National Research Agency (ANR)-funded project FORSEA : Migrations and Forced Labor in the Maritime Economies of Globalized Asia (2026-2028).

Feb 5 at Academia Sinica, we had a wonderful day with “Unwriting Academia”, an inter-UMIFRE and transdisciplinary workshop exploring multimodal and alternative forms of academic writing.

From comics and video essays to film curation, podcasts, and creative ethnography, the discussions were rich, inspiring, and truly cross-disciplinary. A great way to think collectively about how research can be written, shown, heard, and shared differently.

Many thanks to all participants for the energy and exchanges—and a big thank you to the Bureau Français de Taipei (BFT) for supporting this inter-UMIFRE collaboration.
