I reached out to Venerable Myogen at the beginning of this year to ask about spending a month here at ULA. I started watching the YouTube videos, which made me incredibly excited to learn in person and meet these virtual celebrities.
It has been a pleasure to wash the dishes, sweep the stairs, and clean the bathrooms. It feels as though my whole life has been in preparation for my time here. My first job ever was cleaning bathrooms at home for my parents; my second was sweeping popcorn off movie theatre stairs; and my most recent was washing hundreds of dishes by hand at a daycare. These tasks give me lots to think about when I’m not caught up in a conversation about that day’s topic of interest. I think about how a freshly dried bowl will soon be filled with delicious food made with great care to feed all those here who devote their time. Sweeping allows me to see how much dirt, dust, and hair we lose in only a day without even noticing; well, I guess the stairs must notice. Finally, I think that if I am able to truly clean a washroom with joy, I will be able to find joy for the rest of my life. However, not all the tasks were familiar. The garbage and the vegetables were new experiences, which were more challenging because I didn’t have experience to rely on, or for the trash; my previous experience was garbage, unhelpful for what I liked to call “the garbage party”. These new experiences taught me that with practice, a little guidance, and trust in my abilities, I can accomplish new things and turn any challenge into a new tool I can use in the future.
I have particularly enjoyed the classes. I love to learn, and these past eight months of travel have allowed me to learn for fun, which I will cherish. These classes have made it clear how lucky I am to be at a place like ULA. It is truly rare to find a good teacher, and how lucky I am to have found so many in one place. Thank you, Teacher Tang and Teacher Lin, for making this place possible. I understand why everyone works so hard and is devoted to being good students worthy of such teachers and teachings. I am so thankful to have found ULA. It is a gift to find a place that you will miss. I will be back, and I hope it won’t be too long until I return. It is comforting to know that I will have the YouTube channel so I can continue to learn while on the other side of the planet. What a world we live in! Thank you for making it possible to see Taipei. This city is so rich in history, culture, stylish people, and a sense of community that makes me never want to leave. This place brings a feeling of home, it was actually the first place to ever make me feel homesick. I will cherish everything you all have taught me. I am excited to continue learning with you all.

The flowers of the cherry tree,
How they wave about!
It’s not that I do not think of you,
But your home is so far away.
