🟡 Australia's 2026 census will not include a question about variations of s*x characteristics, leaving the inters*x community invisible!

The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates that around 63,300 Australians aged 16 and over know they were born with variations of s*x characteristics. The decision not to separately ask about inters*x status does not conform with the ABS’ own standard guidelines. By not counting this group of people, Australia is ignoring what is considered best practice internationally.

After backlash from the LGBTQIA+ community, the government agreed to include gender and s*xual orientation questions in the new census. So why not inters*x?

🔳 Beyond the boxes 💛💜

On every form. Every passport. Every clinic intake. Every school record. Pick one. Move on.
But some of us have spent a lifetime staring at those two boxes, knowing neither fully explains who we are.

⁣Today is International Non-Binary Day, and we're using it to say what the boxes never could: Gender is bigger than two. Biology is bigger than two. Humanity has always been bigger than two. The non-binary community has been saying it about identity. The inters*x community has been saying it about the body. Two different truths, one shared conclusion:
--> The boxes were never big enough!

The news was confirmed in a post to her TikTok account on June 20 by her friend Irene, who wrote that she had died after living “publicly and courageously” with stage 5 kidney disease.

“Juleigh was beautiful, bold, funny, fearless, and unforgettable,” continued the tribute. “She used her voice to educate others about being inters*x, challenge misconceptions, and advocate for dignity, compassion, and visibility for marginalized communities.”

Juleigh Mayfield, an inters*x activist, died on June 20 at age 51.

🟡 The First Asian Inters*x Activist at Women Deliver 2026!

Inters*x Asia Executive Director Hiker Chiu participated in Women Deliver 2026 (WD26) in Melbourne, marking a historic milestone as the first known inters*x activist from Asia to join the conference in its history.

His participation, along with other global activists from Inters*x Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Inters*x Aotearoa in New Zealand, represented an important step in strengthening inters*x visibility and building bridges between the inters*x movement and wider feminist campaign globally.
