Erratic weather ravages crops, fruit trade
May 17, 2026 | Times of India |

Unseasonal rain, strong winds, and hailstorms have caused severe agricultural losses in Bihar, damaging crops, mango orchards, and litchi production. The extreme weather affected key farming districts during critical growth and harvest periods, leading to widespread crop destruction.

Farmers describe the situation as a “triple blow” due to reduced yields, damaged fruit orchards, and falling market prices. Mango and litchi growers suffered particularly heavy losses after storms damaged blossoms and young fruits, sharply reducing expected harvests and orchard values.

The crisis has also affected harvested crops, with farmers struggling to protect stored produce from sudden storms. Overall, the combination of climate-related damage and declining market prices has placed significant financial pressure on farming communities across the region.

Israel, Iran war affects mango trading in Jagtial
May 19, 2026 | Telangana Today |

Trading at Telangana’s Jagtial mango market has slowed significantly as northern Indian traders reduce purchases due to poor fruit quality and disruptions linked to the Iran-Israel conflict. Exports to Gulf countries have been affected, weakening demand from key overseas markets.

Unseasonal rains and changing climate conditions increased insect damage in orchards, resulting in smaller mangoes with black spots. As a result, traders are offering lower prices, and transport volumes to northern India have dropped sharply.

Farmers, who invested heavily in pest control, are now facing financial pressure due to reduced market demand and falling prices for their produce.

Farmers in Malaysia go high-tech to fight fake Penang durians
May 11, 2026 | The Straits Times |

Malaysia’s Penang durian growers have introduced a QR code tracking system to combat counterfeit durians and protect the reputation of premium Penang varieties. Each durian receives a QR tag that allows consumers to verify its origin and authenticity instantly using a smartphone.

The system stores orchard and verification information in an online database, with safeguards against duplication and misuse. The initiative aims to strengthen consumer confidence and ensure genuine Penang durians are clearly distinguished in the growing global market for premium durian products.

Vietnam ramps up efforts to sustain dragon fruit exports to EU
May 14, 2026 | vnExpress |

Vietnam is strengthening efforts to maintain dragon fruit exports to the EU as the bloc tightens food safety and pesticide residue regulations. Dragon fruit exports remain under enhanced EU inspection, and upcoming rules will apply stricter residue limits for substances considered high risk to health.

In response, Vietnamese authorities are reviewing production practices, providing technical training, and working with EU officials to address compliance issues. Enhanced inspections, traceability systems, and corrective measures have already helped significantly reduce EU food safety warnings in recent years.

Vietnam is also promoting sustainable farming practices, reducing chemical use, and encouraging biological pest control to improve compliance with international standards. Officials view the stricter regulations as both a challenge and an opportunity to improve product quality, transparency, and long-term competitiveness in global markets.

Thailand tightens durian standards in THB150bn export push
May 17, 2026 | The Nation |

Thailand is strengthening durian quality standards to maintain competitiveness in global markets, particularly China. The government aims to boost durian export revenue beyond THB150 billion this year by improving food safety, traceability, and product credibility.

Authorities are addressing key concerns such as immature fruit, pest contamination, chemical residues, and misuse of export rights under a “four noes” policy. Measures include round-the-clock export facilitation, improved inspection systems, upgraded residue-testing laboratories, and stronger traceability through digital systems.

Officials emphasized that Thai durian’s success now depends not only on price but also on quality assurance and consumer confidence in international markets.

Pineapple prices up despite China ban
April 20, 2026 | Taipei Times |

Taiwan’s pineapple prices remain stable and higher than pre-2021 levels despite continued market pressure from China, which previously suspended imports citing pest concerns. The government says domestic demand, seasonal religious events, and diversified export markets have helped support prices.

Since the ban, Taiwan has expanded exports to countries including Japan, Canada, South Korea, and potentially the US. Export performance to Japan has remained steady despite shipping challenges and colder weather.

Officials emphasized ongoing efforts to diversify markets and reduce reliance on China. Meanwhile, Taiwan recently introduced pineapples to the Malaysian market, where initial shipments received strong consumer interest and rapid preorders.

Guava puree market set to nearly double by 2036
April 15, 2026 | Fresh Fruit Portal |

The global guava puree market is projected to grow from US$547 million to nearly US$952 million by 2036, driven by rising demand for natural, clean-label ingredients. Beverages dominate the market, accounting for over half of total usage, as guava provides both natural color and flavor without additives. Baby food and functional products are also expanding segments.

Concentrated puree is the most widely traded form due to its longer shelf life and lower transport costs. China and India are leading growth markets, supported by increasing consumption and production capacity, while Europe shows strong demand for organic and low-sugar products.

However, the industry faces challenges from weather-related supply fluctuations, rising packaging and storage costs, and strict import regulations. Companies investing in cold-chain systems, traceability, and sustainable processing are expected to gain a competitive advantage.

Durian shipments from South-East Asia hit peak season as China-Laos Railway drives tropical fruit boom
April 16, 2026 | The Star |

The China-Laos Railway is playing a key role in transporting Southeast Asian tropical fruits, especially durians, to China quickly and efficiently. During peak harvest season, durians from countries like Thailand, Laos, and Malaysia are shipped via the Lancang-Mekong Express, reaching Kunming in about 26 hours and other major Chinese cities within 48 hours.

To meet rising demand, freight train frequency has increased, and cold-chain logistics have been strengthened with thousands of refrigerated containers and fast customs clearance. A “green channel” system ensures rapid unloading and distribution, minimizing spoilage.

Thailand alone is exporting around 1,500 containers of durians daily, with volumes expected to peak soon. Overall, the railway is expected to transport over 200,000 tonnes of tropical fruits in 2026, highlighting its importance in regional agricultural trade.

Agronometrics in Charts: Record Mexican shipments drop US avocado prices to $1 per pound
April 16, 2026 | Fresh Fruit Portal |

The US avocado market continues to grow in 2026, driven mainly by rising imports rather than domestic production. California output is expected to increase slightly, but imports dominate supply, reaching a record 2.87 billion pounds in 2025. Mexico remains the primary supplier, accounting for the vast majority of imports.

Early 2026 shipments from Mexico have increased significantly, with a higher proportion of larger fruit, contributing to falling prices. Additional seasonal imports from Peru and Colombia further boost supply, especially during peak periods.

While increased availability benefits consumers through lower prices, it intensifies competition for US producers, particularly in California, highlighting the market’s strong reliance on imports.
