✨2026 Sámi Studies Lecture Series (Session 2)✨
[Online Academic Lecture] Indigenous Epistemic Justice in Practice: Lessons from Sámi Higher Education and Research
To further advance comparative ethnicity research and international scholarly dialogue, the Ethnic Studies Promotion and Coordination Program will launch the Nordic Sámi Studies Lecture Series in the first half of 2026. The series brings together scholars from diverse disciplines to share their Sámi-related research and methodological approaches. Topics will include identity determination and the politics of recognition, higher education, transitional justice, museums and cultural governance, and more. This lecture is the second session of the series, and we warmly invite faculty, students, and researchers interested in these issues to join us.
📚️Lecture Description
This lecture explores Indigenous epistemic justice from a Sámi perspective in Scandinavia, focusing on the development, current landscape, and key challenges of Sámi higher education and research. Through concrete examples—such as the institutionalization of Sámi crafting (duodji)—the talk examines how Indigenous knowledge is recognized, governed, and transformed within academic and policy settings. It will also engage critically with research ethics and data governance frameworks, including FAIR and CARE, asking what they mean from a Sámi standpoint and how they connect to broader dilemmas faced by Indigenous research worldwide.
