台灣自1983年開始辦理十大傑出專業農民選拔表揚，1984年擴大為十大傑出青年農民、十大傑出專業農民、十大傑出農家婦女，由農委會頒予「神農獎」， 2007年改為十大經典神農與12位模範農民。
神農獎得主遍佈全國各地，這是唯一由政府選拔表揚象徵農民最高榮譽之獎項。為重視農村菁英，藉以經驗傳承，並協助政府農業政策推行，1987年成立傑出農民聯誼會，1994年4月17日正式在內政部立案核定成立中華民國傑出農民協會。以協助農業創新卓越及永續經營並辦理會員聯繫交流，推廣農業技術優化升級，促進農業經濟發展為宗旨。
