紅十字會成立於1863年，由紅十字之父亨利‧杜南先生發起，並號召了四位日內瓦公民，加上杜南先生本人共五人聯合成立了「救援傷兵國際委員會」(International Committee for the Relief of the Wounded)。其後再演變為紅十字國際委員會 ( International Committee of the Red Cross )，從此紅十字會成為國際性的人道服務救援平台，截至目前全球有189個國家成立紅十字會或紅新月會。


紅十字之父—亨利‧杜南

國際紅十字組織的成立，必須回溯到西元1859年，當時瑞士銀行家亨利‧杜南(Henry Dunant)先生出差旅行，途經義大利倫巴底，那時正逢奧地利與法國及薩丁尼亞聯軍作戰，在蘇法利諾( Solferino)一役中，雙方死傷慘重，戰場上無人照顧的傷兵哀號遍地、隨處可見。杜南先生親眼目睹其慘狀，眼見傷兵乏人照

顧、輾轉致死，其情境令人震驚，心中燃生哀慟之情，久久不能自己。


「蘇法利諾回憶錄」

回國後，杜南先生無法忘記他親眼所見的情景，於是將這一次的經歷寫成「蘇法利諾回憶錄」一書，並於1862年自費出版，此書在朋友、慈善工作者、軍官、政治家以及一些有社會地位的顯赫家族間傳閱，於是蘇法利諾事件震驚了這些人，得到廣泛的注意與重視。 為了防止同樣的事件再度重演，杜南先生極力呼籲成立一個民間中立的救援組織，以便在戰爭發生時，能及時救助在戰場上受傷的傷兵。


【五位發起人】

西元1863年，杜南先生將他的大愛化為行動，號召了四位日內瓦公民 ─ 古斯塔‧莫瓦尼埃（Gustave Moynier）、吉勒姆亨利‧杜福爾（Guillaume-Henri Dufour）、路易斯‧阿皮亞（Louis Appai）、西奧多‧莫諾瓦（Theodore Maunoir）等，加上杜南先生本人共五人聯合成立了「救援傷兵國際委員會」(International Committee for the Relief of the Wounded) 。其後再演變為紅十字國際委員會 ( International Committee of the Red Cross ) ，此即紅十字會的起源。
