The Nest Builder – A Solo Exhibition by Lin Wen-Hsuan
The Nest Builder is presented at Home Under the Big Chimney, stemming from the unexpected discovery of several solitary wasp nests. Attached quietly to walls, beams, and eaves, these small mud nests resemble miniature architectures left behind by time, existing alongside the historic buildings.
While we often focus on the traces of human habitation and historical memory, we unexpectedly encountered another form of life that continues to live, build, and reproduce within the same space. Artist Wen Hsuan Lin has long observed and researched mud-dauber wasps, using their nest-building practices as a starting point to reflect on the meanings of dwelling, construction, and belonging.
In this place where generations of people once lived, moved, and departed, The Nest Builder presents the life story of the mud-dauber wasp, and invites visitors to view the world from a non-human perspective—reconsidering how homes are formed and how every living being searches for a place to belong.
Working in seven-year creative cycles, Wen Hsuan Lin has spent fourteen years since first encountering the mud-dauber wasp. Through a letter written to her seven-year-old self, she opens a dialogue across time, revisiting her artistic journey and lifelong pursuit.
“… The first time I saw one was in a crack in a wall — a small, oval room made of mud. It had an owner, but was completely still. I wasn't sure whether it counted as a "home." But as someone who also works with earth, I couldn't walk past without stopping to look. From that moment, I began to follow this creature closely.
The mud dauber wasp lives alone. No queen, no colony, no hierarchy — only itself, and the offspring it will never meet. It carries mud, trip after trip, building its nest on walls, under eaves, in any corner that goes unnoticed. It provides, seals the entrance, and leaves. This way of living fascinates me. I feel a deep resonance with it — a life so quietly, stubbornly present.
This work takes the mud dauber wasp as its guide, and tries to measure the meaning of "home" from the wasp's point of view.
