A saint wrote down exactly how Catholics should behave at Mass. It's not long. But almost nobody is doing it anymore... ⤵️

St. Padre Pio had a deep love for the Holy Mass and the Eucharist. People close to him often spoke about the great reverence he showed at Mass, especially toward the Eucharist, because he truly believed Jesus is present there: Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity, exactly as the Catholic Church teaches.

In a 1915 letter to Anita Rodote, Padre Pio gave practical advice on how Catholics should behave inside church and during Mass. Reading it today honestly feels challenging, because of how casual things can sometimes become.

Not harsh.
Just deeply reverent.

He encouraged people to enter church quietly, make the Sign of the Cross carefully with holy water, and genuflect devoutly before the Blessed Sacrament. He said we should kneel peacefully, pray with trust, and bring Jesus both our needs and the needs of others.

He even gave very specific advice for how to carry yourself during Mass:

➞ Don’t constantly look around the church.
➞ Don’t rush your prayers.
➞ Avoid unnecessary talking before Mass.
➞ Pray slowly and attentively.
➞ Leave church quietly after asking Jesus for His blessing.

Small things, but they reveal something deeper: Padre Pio believed the church was truly a sacred place, not just a meeting hall.

“Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand.”
– Ancient Liturgy of St. James

St. Padre Pio also warned against distractions during prayer. In his letter, he advised people not to look around constantly, laugh loudly, or speak unnecessarily inside church. Instead, he encouraged recollection, modesty, devotion, and attention during prayer and worship.

One line especially stands out:

“Behave in such a way that all the present are edified by you.”

That can feel uncomfortable in a world where silence is rare and distraction is constant. Phones buzz. Conversations continue inside church. Many people rush in late or leave immediately after receiving Communion. Yet Catholics believe something supernatural is taking place at every Mass.

Scripture says, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).

John Vianney once said, “If we really understood the Holy Mass, we would die of joy.” That quote reflects the deep reverence many saints had for the Eucharist and the sacrifice of the Mass.

Padre Pio was not trying to make people fearful. He was reminding people of Who they are standing before. The Catholic Church teaches that the Eucharist is not symbolic alone, but truly Jesus Christ present in the sacrament.

Honestly, many of us, myself included, probably need that reminder more often.

💬 Be honest, what's the one thing Padre Pio mentioned that you know you struggle with at Mass? For me it's avoiding unnecessary talking before Mass..
