Indian classical dance, born from the sound of His feet against the Earth that culminated the art of rhythm, and the symphony of his rage that wove tune. Nataraj, the deity whose mere presence is the beat needed to keep the heart of Indian classical dance beating. Be it the strength of Bharatanatyam, the elegance of Kuchipudi, the finesse of Kathak, or the grace of Odissi, Natraj is the beginning, and the end.
However, here at Nrityanjali theatre, Natraj is not just a presence, He is also a symbol. He is the symbol of perseverance in the form of dance, since the year 1977, and symbolic of staying consistent in an ever-changing society. On their first day of dance class, a student at Nrityanjali is first greeted with the God of Dance, signifying the persistent and unchanging nature of the art form.
The picture below marked the commencement of our 2024 ballet, "Navras". "Nav", a Sanskrit word for "nine", while "Ras", the Sanskrit word for "flavour", create the word "Navras", a ballet highlighting the nine flavours of the human condition.
