Trinidad & Tobago is in dire need of healthcare reform and in order to achieve this, our current healthcare systems, policies and procedures need to be re-examined to ensure all citizens have an improved and affordable access to services and innovative therapies. The transformation of the healthcare system must be broad based by addressing the deficient elements and all Member Organizations working in synergy to neutralize the recurring problems such as escalating cost, inappropriate, inconsistent quality of drugs. Additionally, insufficient and lack of functional technologies in the Public System, inadequate services and other disruptive issues.
The Ministry of Health is responsible for leading the healthcare sector in Trinidad & Tobago, and plays a key role in policy development, planning, monitoring and evaluation, regulation, financing and research based on assessment of real healthcare needs.
While there are no perfect solutions to healthcare problems, strategies that support education and patient engagement are fundamental planks in healthcare reform. Patient involvement in healthcare decision making has become a necessity in many countries around the world since the adoption of any policies or decisions associated with healthcare and treatment services affects their lives. Thus, involvement in health matters and development of macro health policies are considered critical among patient’s human and civil rights. Planning and provision of patient oriented healthcare services based on the opinions, needs and preferences of patients, those who care about them and the community is fundamental in the challenge for any health sector. Yet, it is an essential element for improving healthcare systems in order to gain public approval, trust, confidence, and give patients a peace of mind.
Alliance of Patients Foundation (AOPF) is a non-profit organization that was registered on 21st May, 2018. We are a network of NGOs, members and volunteers working together towards improving patient care in Trinidad & Tobago, lobbying for changes and policy reform in the healthcare sector. Membership is opened to Patient Organizations registered with the Registrar of Companies in Trinidad & Tobago, patients and to individuals with a passion for providing voluntary services. Application for membership must be approved by the Alliance of Patients Foundation.
At AOPF, we believe that every patient matters regardless of their type of disease and medical condition. No patient should be left behind. Each patient is considered a pillar of the organization and should lobby to ensure quality services, support and treatment are delivered at the appropriate time.
WHAT WE DO
We stand up for patients by lobbying for improved access to medicines, diagnostics and other allied health support services. AOPF provides education on medical conditions of interest to other patient organizations and individuals thereby ensuring that they are kept up to date with the latest information about their disease and advancement in treatments and technologies.
Our strategic partners are well equipped and competent with a range of skills and expertise to work together by providing capacity-building and support tools geared towards improving efficiency and sustainability of the NGOs. Additionally, we provide a forum for NGOs and individuals to share their personal experiences and feelings openly, discuss coping strategies and to gain practical feedback on treatment options, health and other social resources. There is no discrimination of disease or condition of the patient as AOPF is empathetic towards all patients’ needs. All patients are coached into being self-motivated and empowered while encouraging others to do same.
We continue to advocate for research on medical conditions in areas of clinical needs and assessments, rights of patients whilst representing their views on all healthcare issues and contributing to shape the policy environment.

BECOME A STRATEGIC PARTNER
The right information about care and treatment can sometimes be confusing and difficult to find. When patients and their families need assistance, they need a functional and sustained community that can provide advice, support and guidance. Everyone has the right to receive proper care when required, sometimes casual, but thorough dialogue with someone who is empathetic.
Partnerships can produce meaningful healthcare outcomes for patients because there is strength in numbers.
As an alliance of NGOs, we aim to achieve a shared purpose, building upon the commonalities that links us. Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish-American philanthropist once said, “working together towards a common vision is the fuel that allows ordinary people to attain extraordinary results.” Together, we will raise our voices as a single entity that works to improve the lives of all patients. Having a unanimous voice on key issues help to raise awareness and open doors to decision makers. An added bonus is the strength gained from pooled resources and expertise.
