Women's Institute for Alternative Development - WINAD Since 1999, we've been working to advance the rights of women and girls in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Women's Institute for Alternative Development is a Non Governmental Organization that exists to advance the rights of women and girls through thought leadership, mentoring, quality service delivery, and stakeholder engagement. It was founded in 1999 by 3 women, Sattie Narace, Jillian Duncan, and Folade Mutota. As a women's organization, WINAD is committed to strengthening the capacity and soci

al consciousness of women and girls to lead social transformation in Trinidad and Tobago. WINAD's work is based on three pillars: Research, Advocacy and Sensitization

Their programme enables women and girls to explore and embrace an alternative leadership framework which integrates the collective genius of all the people. In the year it was founded, WINAD introduced its Inter-generational Women’s Leadership Programme. This programme partners girls with mature, conscious women (Big Sisters) who provide guidance and together they build sisterhood. WINAD’s pioneering work on gender, peace and security in the Caribbean is also recognised regionally and internationally due to its innovative approach to alliance building with CARICOM governments and NGOs for collaborative planning.

This report which was produced by the Outreach & Research Team of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies, St. Augustine Unit is the result of deep collaboration.

We extend sincere thanks to our partners, Zivik Funding Programme, Institute for Gender and Development Studies, St. Augustine Unit as well as the Women’s Council, our team of data collectors, our advisory committee, project team members and consultants, whose commitment, care, and leadership made this work possible.

Women are on the frontlines of violence prevention but too often left out of arms-control decisions.

Join us on December 4 for a 16 Days of Activism webinar exploring how gender-responsive small arms control can reduce GBV, strengthen community safety, and elevate women’s leadership in peace and security.

Hear from leading experts as we unpack how fi****ms increase GBV risks, where policy gaps persist, and the practical ways women are shaping safer communities.

On Saturday 29 November, the Borderline Voices Leading Change project team met with internal stakeholders, including members of the Women’s Council, international interns, and key service providers for a project check-in.

The project team comprising Folade Mutota, Gary Grant and Shelley Toney reviewed the various leadership activities completed by our Women's Council to date and provided administrative and financial reports.

They also took time to acknowledge the diligent work of our interns, Emilie Aziza Amisi and Marian Mohamoud, who produced research on international women’s leadership models and potential funding pathways.

Finally, members of the Women's Council were also given the opportunity to share updates on their mentorship experience thus far.

This collaborative review ensures transparency and shared ownership as the project moves toward its final phase.

Transport isn’t just about getting from one place to another .

In many borderline communities, it shapes access to school, work, safety, and basic services.

Our 2025 research shows how cost, distance, borderlines, and disability all affect women’s ability to move through their communities.
