OWTU PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE MIGHTY SPARROW

Members of the Executive of the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union (OWTU), led by President General Comrade Ancel Roget, paid their respects this morning (Tuesday 13th October) to the legendary Calypso King of the World, Dr Slinger Francisco, the Mighty Sparrow, during the public viewing at the Southern Academy of Performing Arts (SAPA).

During the visit, President General Comrade Ancel Roget signed the visitors’ book and a commemorative poster celebrating Sparrow’s remarkable accomplishments and greatest hits, honouring the extraordinary legacy of a man whose music helped shape Trinidad and Tobago’s cultural identity and influenced generations across the world.

The Mighty Sparrow was more than a calypsonian. Through his music, he became a powerful voice on social issues, politics, injustice, and everyday life. His sharp wit, fearless commentary and unmatched contribution to calypso earned him international acclaim and an enduring place in Caribbean history.

The OWTU proudly recognised Sparrow’s outstanding contribution to our nation’s cultural heritage on 29th October 2015, when the Union presented him with an award during Calypso History Month. This recognition reflected the Union’s appreciation for his immense contribution to the art form and his role in preserving and advancing our rich cultural traditions.

As we pay tribute to this cultural giant, we celebrate a legacy that transcends generations. His melodies, messages and powerful storytelling will continue to resonate in the hearts of the people of Trinidad and Tobago and throughout the world.

OWTU MOURNS THE PASSING OF CALYPSO KING OF THE WORLD MIGHTY SPARROW

The Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union (OWTU) joins Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean, and people around the world in mourning the passing of our beloved Calypso King of the World, Dr Slinger Francisco “the Mighty Sparrow”.

For the OWTU, this is more than the passing of a great calypsonian. We have lost a champion, a cultural giant and a voice that spoke fearlessly on behalf of ordinary people. To us, Sparrow did not earn his crown merely because he could sing, entertain or command a stage. He earned it because he understood the power of his voice, the struggles of the people, injustice, poverty and inequality. He understood the frustrations of the working class. And, through his music, he gave expression to what many ordinary people felt. That is why his music resonated so deeply with the labour movement.

In “Capitalism Gone Mad,” he gave voice to the concerns of working people struggling with the economic realities of their time. Additionally, he sang about a wide range of topics: human rights, education, social injustice, discrimination and the condition of society. he reminded us that calypso could be much more than entertainment.

For us in the trade union movement, Sparrow was one of our own as He celebrated our people while holding up a mirror to our shortcomings. He did this with the unmistakable wit, courage, and creativity that made him Sparrow.

On October 29th, 2015, as part of Calypso History Month, the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union honoured and presented an award to this great son of the Caribbean. To us however, that occasion was more than honouring this great man and presenting him with an award. It was our way of saying thank you for decades of music, for speaking for the working people, for putting Trinidad and Tobago on the world's cultural map, and for reminding generations of Caribbean people who we are.

Today, as we mourn, we also celebrate. We celebrate a life that enriched our country. We celebrate the man who could make us laugh, make us dance, and make us think.

The Mighty Sparrow sang about us; he sang for us, and, in many ways, he fought for us.

His songs will continue to live in our homes, our Carnival tents, our workplaces, our communities and in the hearts of generations yet unborn.

The stage may now be empty, but the voice remains. The records will continue to play. The lyrics will continue to be remembered. And the message will continue to resonate.

To the family of Dr Slinger Francisco, the calypso fraternity, the people of Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean, and the world, we extend our deepest condolences and salute a true champion of the people.

Rest well, Mighty Sparrow. You gave the people a voice that will never be forgotten.
