OWTU Mourns the Passing of Comrade Cecil Paul

The Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union (OWTU) mourns the passing of Cecil Paul, former First Vice President and dedicated trade unionist, who served on the executive from 1980 to 1989 and passed away on August 18, 2026.

As a committed and devoted trade unionist who served in various roles within the OWTU, Comrade Paul’s passing is a significant loss for the OWTU and the trade union movement, as he was known foremost for his commitment to workers’ rights and social justice.

As First Vice President of the OWTU, he will be remembered for his unwavering belief in the power of labour, collective action and trade union solidarity. His commitment to these principles extended beyond the OWTU, as shown through his service as General Secretary of the Council of Progressive Trade Unions and his significant role in uniting the country’s trade union movement under the National Trade Union Centre (NATUC), where he became its first Deputy General Secretary.

Comrade Paul was also a founding member of the United Labour Front and a committee member of the National Workers Union, where he continued to champion the interests of the working class.
With an Enduring Legacy based on service, solidarity and struggle, the OWTU honours him for his dedication to workers and organised labour. Though he is gone, the fight for workers’ rights continues.

Rest in Peace, Comrade Cecil Paul. Your contributions will be remembered.
