Today, we are featuring the Purple Honeycreeper (Cyanerpes caeruleus), a striking species found across Colombia, Venezuela and Trinidad.
Captured in the photo is a male Purple Honeycreeper.
The males have stunning, deep violet-blue feathers, complemented by a black throat patch and wings, and bright yellow legs. Their long, slender bill is slightly curved. Females, in contrast, have a more subdued appearance, with predominantly green plumage, a cinnamon-coloured head, and a blue-green streaked underside. Their belly is yellowish, and their straight bill is highlighted by a distinctive blue stripe along the sides. Juvenile males resemble females initially, but gradually transition to the vivid coloration of the adult male.
The Purple Honeycreeper is a forest canopy dwelling species, but can also be spotted in gardens, as well as cocoa and citrus plantations. The species is currently classified as "Least Concern" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Join us on Friday as we showcase the beauty of our natural environment 🌿🌍
