Royal Philanthropic Lodge 405EC

Royal Philanthropic Lodge 405EC Philanthropic Lodge №856 warranted in 29/3/1831, is the oldest English Lodge in T&T. It was founded 21/3/1835. TMZ building was founded 15/8/1935

In 1856 the Lodge received the prefix "Royal" and in the GL renumbering in 1863 assigned the number "405". The Philanthropic Lodge, then No. 856, was erected and consecrated in Trinidad in 1835 some twenty two years after the UGLE was formed. It was the first of twelve regular Lodges to be erected, consecrated and remain working since that day. Of these twelve, eight continue working today and sub

mit themselves to the supervision of the present District Grand Lodge. The Philanthropic Lodge was in dormancy for the period 1842 to 1850 and came out of that experience in time to be renumbered in 1863 from 856 to 405 and had the term Royal added to its name in 1859. The Royal Philanthropic Lodge 405 EC is the oldest English Lodge in the island state of Trinidad and Tobago and indeed is one of the oldest Lodges in the English Constitution.

The History of English Constitution Lodges in Trinidad and Tobago:

1835 - THE PHILANTHROPIC LODGE 856
The Philanthropic Lodge, then No. 856, was erected and consecrated in Trinidad in 1835 some twenty two years after the UGLE was formed. The Lodge affiliated a Scottish Mason Bro. Daniel Hart in 1837 who went to the chair in 1850 and went on to become one of the driving forces in the Lodge and later in English Freemasonry. In 1859 Daniel Hart was formally installed as the Provincial Grand Master of the Southern Caribbean, excluding Tobago but including St Thomas in the Virgin Isles. Hart’s province was small by most standards and his first attempt at correcting this took place in 1861.

1850 - LODGE TRINITY
On 2nd February 1850 Lodge Trinity was warranted by the UGLE with only two English Masons as founders. Apparently the Lodge started working without being consecrated and had great difficulty in functioning until Daniel Hart intervened in the year of his Installation as WM of RPL. He later intervened some nine years later when as Provincial Grand Master he suspended the Lodge for some three months. In 1864 the Lodge Temple – constructed in 1856 – was burnt together with the warrant. The latter was replaced by the UGLE that same year but the Lodge became dormant some two decades after, returning its warrant in 1890 and was erased on the 3rd June, 1908.

1868 - PRINCE of WALES LODGE 868
The Provincial Grand Master V. Wor. Bro. Daniel Hart, having only one active English Lodge working (Trinity Lodge 837), forwarded the application dated 18th April 1861 with the utmost despatch and with a prayer to constitute a new Lodge in the name of "The Prince of Wales Lodge" to England. The application was signed by seven Brethren, six were members of Philanthropic Lodge. Grand Lodge dealt with the application with equal despatch granting a warrant dated 17th May 1861 to the Prince of Wales Lodge to be held at Royal Philanthropic Lodge room. On Thursday 20th August 1861, the Prince of Wales Lodge 1169 EC was erected and consecrated. Like the Philanthropic Lodge, the Prince of Wales Lodge was renumbered in 1863 from 1169 to 867 and had the term Royal added to its name in 1862. Once the Royal Philanthropic Lodge had spawned the Royal Prince of Wales Lodge the latter started an expansion program over time that led to the formation of all but one of the other existing English Lodges.Unfortunately all the early records of both the Philanthropic Lodge and the Prince of Wales Lodge were lost when the building they occupied was destroyed by fire on the Carnival Monday night of 24th February 1868

1862 - PHOENIX LODGE 1213
By the year following the er****on and consecration of the Prince of Wales Lodge, Daniel Hart the Provincial Grand Master erected Phoenix Lodge 1213 E. C. This Lodge was consecrated on 30th April 1862. During its short life span it attracted a number of Spanish members. For some unknown reason the Lodge became dormant during the period 1876 to 1879 and was erased on the 5th March 1889.

1877 - HERVEY LODGE was founded by the then Deputy D.G. Master, the W.M. and W.M. elect of Royal Philanthropic Lodge who virtually closed down the latter Lodge for 12 years. All the founders were from Philanthropic. The Deputy D.G.M. issued an irregular Provisional Charter on the 2 January 1877 and the United Grand Lodge of England refused to confirm it. On the presentation of a proper petition to Grand Lodge the Charter was granted on 15 November 1878. The Lodge was erected and consecrated by the Deputy D.G.M. on 8 March 1879. After the revival of working at Royal Philanthropic in 1888, Hervey Lodge languished and went dormant and was erased by United Grand Lodge on 7 August 1898.

1909 - CONNAUGHT LODGE 3266
Several Brethren of Royal Prince of Wales Lodge No. 867 EC led by Wor. Bro. (later Sir) George F. Huggins conceived the idea of forming a third English Lodge in Trinidad in order to qualify for a District Grand Lodge. As a consequence, the Connaught Lodge 3266 EC was warranted on Tuesday 5th November 1907 and erected and consecrated on Saturday 1st May 1909. This Lodge drew most of its membership from expatriates working in this former colony. With Independence the membership of the Lodge declined but it is now stabilising itself. This Lodge had the term Royal added to its name in 1910.

1920 - ST. ANDREW LODGE 3963 EC was erected and consecrated on the 31 May 1920. It is the older of the two English Lodges still operating in San Fernando. After a mere eight years of existence the Brethren in the Lodge saw the importance of having their own home and by 1928 a site for their Temple Mount Horeb was purchased for $360.00 and a tender for the er****on of the building for $10,850 was accepted. The consecration of the building was performed on the 11 August 1930. In 1947 a piece of land to the west of the Lodge was purchased for $862.00 and a portion to the East sold in 1953 for $3,466.40 so that today the Temple occupies a central position on the three parcels with room for expansion.

1944 - St AUGUSTINE LODGE though warranted by the UGLE was never erected and consecrated for reasons unknown and the warrant was returned to UGLE in 1947.

1952 - NAPARIMA LODGE 7108 EC was erected and consecrated on Saturday 26 January 1952 at the Masonic Temple, Les Efforts, San Fernando by the then Grand Inspector V.W. Bro. G.O.M. O'Reilly. The petition for the Lodge was supported in the main by Brethren from St Andrew’s Lodge and it became and still is the second English Lodge operating in San Fernando.

1966 - TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO MASTERS LODGE 8057 was erected and consecrated on Wednesday 23rd February 1966 by the M.W. Pro. Grand Master, MW Bro. Rt Hon. The Earl Cadogan, MC DL at Mt Zion, (the Philanthropic Temple). The main purpose for the er****on of the Lodge was to be the first in this jurisdiction dedicated to research, where papers could be read for enlightenment and Past Masters could develop some additional interests. At the beginning of its life the membership of the Lodge was limited to Past and Ruling Masters but that has since changed allowing Master Masons among its membership. Since the establishment of the District Grand Lodge, two other Lodges have been erected and consecrated.

1968, the District Grand Lodge of Trinidad and Tobago was formed when Brethren from the Royal Philanthropic Lodge No. 405 EC and five other active English Constitution lodges in the country at the time—unified to inaugurate the DGLTT to gain structured regional autonomy.

1982 - DANIEL HART LODGE 9028 EC was named in honour of the Rt Wor. Bro. Daniel Hart (Snr.) P.M. Royal Philanthropic Lodge 405 EC, Royal Prince of Wales Lodge 867EC and the first Provincial Grand Master in Trinidad. It was erected and consecrated on Wednesday 28 April 1982 at the R.P.W. Lodge Temple in St Clair and in the first instance attracted a number of the younger Brethren from The Royal Prince of Wales Lodge. That profile has since changed and its growth has become independent of its ‘mother’ Lodge.

2001 - ARTHUR EMLYN LODGE 9742 EC was named in honour of the Rt Wor. Bro. Arthur Emlyn, the last Grand inspector and first District Grand Master of the present English District Grand Lodge. It was erected and consecrated on Wednesday 11th May 2001 at the Royal Prince of Wales Temple in St Clair by the then Pro Grand Master Lord Northampton.

🌟 A Reflective Masonic Devotional Message
Brethren, let us pause from the labors of the day and turn our thoughts inward, lifting them toward the Great Architect of the Universe.

🕊️ On Humility and Equality
We are reminded that no eminence of station, no wealth, nor worldly honor can separate us from the sacred bond of Brotherhood. The humblest Brother upon the lowest spoke of fortune’s wheel is equally entitled to our regard, for in the eyes of the Eternal, all men stand upon the Level.

⚖️ On Service and Duty
Freemasonry calls us to live not for ourselves alone, but for the good of others. Service above self is the true measure of greatness. Each act of kindness, each word of encouragement, each labor performed in charity is a stone laid in the temple of humanity.

💀 On Mortality and Legacy
Memento Mori — remember that you must die. This truth is not given to instill fear, but to inspire purpose. Life is fleeting, but the virtues we practice endure. Friendship, virtue, and truth are monuments not of stone, but of spirit, built within the hearts of men and lasting for generations.

🌍 On Brotherhood Eternal
Let us walk together in unity, supporting one another in joy and in sorrow. May our fellowship be a light to the world, showing that true Brotherhood transcends borders, faiths, and circumstances.

✨ Closing Reflection
Brethren, as we depart from this moment of devotion, let us carry with us the charge to build a better tomorrow upon the foundation of Masonic traditions. May our lives be temples of service, humility, and truth, consecrated to the glory of the Great Architect of the Universe.

In a Masonic lodge, the Treasurer and Secretary are critical administrative officers.

The Treasurer manages lodge finances and funds, while the Secretary handles daily administration, member rosters, and official records.

Both are vital to the smooth operation and governance of the lodge.

THE LODGE TREASURER

Role: Serves as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the lodge, responsible for its financial health, accountability, and the protection of operating funds. Similar to the Worshipful Master, the Treasurer is elected by the members of the Lodge.

Duties: Receives all incoming monies from the Secretary, keeps a detailed and true account of lodge assets, issues payments for debts by order of the Worshipful Master and consent of the lodge, and presents comprehensive financial reports during communications.

Jewel: A pair of Crossed Keys (signifying the collection and distribution of funds and holding the keys to the cashbox).

THE SECRETARY

Role: The administrative backbone of the lodge, acting as the primary conduit between the lodge and the Grand Lodge.

Duties: Records meeting minutes, issues summons (meeting notices), maintains membership records, and processes annual dues.

Jewel: Crossed Quill Pens (symbolizing the recording of proceedings and the tracking of members' records).

His journey through the Craft was marked by steadfast devotion, dignity, and brotherly love.

Though his earthly labors have ceased, his spirit continues to illuminate our path, reminding us of the virtues of service, humility, and fraternity.

On this blessed Heavenly Birthday, we give thanks for the light he shared among us.

May the GAOTU grant him eternal rest, and may perpetual light shine upon him.

Ever remembered, ever cherished — his memory lives on in the hearts of brethren and in the enduring work of the Craft.

"Yet ought no eminence of situation make us forget that we are brothers, for he who is placed on the lowest spoke of fortune’s wheel is equally entitled to our regard, as a time will come… Memento Mori."

🌟 In the quiet chambers of the Lodge, beneath the vaulted canopy of heaven, Freemasonry whispers a timeless truth: all men are equal in the sight of the Great Architect of the Universe.

🕊️ Humility in Eminence
No station in life, no crown of success, no robe of authority should blind us to the fact that we are Brothers. The Master upon the Chair and the Initiate upon his first step are bound by the same oblig- ations, guided by the same light, and destined for the same end.

⚖️ The Wheel of Fortune
Life turns like a wheel — today one may stand at its summit, tomorrow at its lowest spoke. Fortune is fleeting, but fraternity endures. To honor the Brother in humble circumstances is to honor the eternal principle that dignity is not measured by wealth or rank, but by character and virtue.

💀 Memento Mori
The phrase Memento Mori — “Remember you must die” — is not a morbid reminder, but a liberating truth. It teaches us that all earthly distinctions fade before the grave. The emblems of power, the ornaments of office, the applause of men — all dissolve into dust. What remains is the legacy of kindness, the memory of brotherly love, and the eternal soul.

🤝 Brotherhood Eternal
Thus, Freemasonry calls us to live with compassion, humility, and fraternity. To lift the fallen, to comfort the sorrowful, to rejoice with the joyful, and to walk together on the level. For when the wheel turns, and our own time comes, it is not eminence that will be remembered, but the bonds we forged in love and truth.

🌟 "Building a better tomorrow on the foundation of Masonic traditions" is more than a phrase — it is a vision. It reminds us that the wisdom of the past is not meant to be locked away in history, but to serve as a living cornerstone for the future.

🕊️ The Foundation of Tradition
Freemasonry’s traditions — the Square, the Compass, the Level, the Plumb — are not relics of a bygone age. They are eternal guides, teaching fairness, integrity, equality, and uprightness. These tools shape men into builders of character, architects of virtue, and guardians of truth.

⚖️ Tomorrow’s Promise
A better tomorrow is not built by chance, but by choice. Each Brother, through his daily actions, lays a stone upon the foundation of tradition. Acts of charity, words of encouragement, and deeds of integrity become the bricks of a stronger society.

🤝 Brotherhood as the Mortar
Tradition alone cannot stand without the binding force of brotherhood. It is fraternity that cements the stones together — the shared labor, the mutual respect, the unwavering support. Brotherhood ensures that the edifice of tomorrow is not cold stone, but a living temple of compassion and unity.

🌍 A Universal Vision
Masonic traditions transcend borders and cultures. They call us to build not only Lodges, but communities where justice, equality, and love prevail. In this way, Freemasonry becomes a universal language of hope, speaking to all who seek light.

✨ The Eternal Work
The work is never finished. Each generation of Masons inherits the tools, the lessons, and the charge to continue building. Tomorrow is always under construction, and it is our sacred duty to ensure that what we build rests firmly upon the timeless foundation of Masonic traditions.

"Let the gavel of truth shape your character, the compass guide your actions, and the light within the Lodge inspire your walk through darkness. In Brotherhood, we build not just temples—but better men."

🌟 Freemasonry is more than ritual, more than symbols — it
is a living journey of the soul. It begins with a man stepping across the threshold of the Lodge, uncertain yet hopeful, and it unfolds into a lifelong path of growth, fellowship, and service.

🕊️ The Mystic Tie
There is a bond that cannot be broken, forged not by circumstance but by shared values. This Mystic Tie unites men across nations, cultures, and generations. It is strengthened by travel, by fellowship, and by the quiet knowledge that wherever a Mason goes, he will find a Brother ready to extend a hand in friendship.

⚖️ The Tools of Transformation
Freemasonry does not promise shortcuts to power or success. Instead, it offers tools — the Square to remind us of fairness, the Compass to guide our boundaries, the Level to affirm equality, and the Plumb to teach uprightness. These tools are not ends in themselves; they are instruments for shaping the heart, the mind, and the spirit.

🤝 Brotherhood in Action
True fraternity is not found in titles or regalia, but in the warmth of fellowship. A Brother’s greeting at the door, a shared laugh after labor, a helping hand in times of need — these are the moments that transform formality into family. Through charity, mentorship, and civic duty, Masons extend this brotherhood beyond the Lodge, building stronger families and communities.

🌍 A Universal Brotherhood
Freemasonry embraces men of all faiths and backgrounds, affirming that while paths may differ, values of truth, integrity, and virtue are shared. In this diversity lies strength — a brotherhood without boundaries, united in the pursuit of enlightenment and service.

✨ The Journey Continues
Every Lodge meeting, every handshake, every lesson learned is a step on the Winding Staircase of life. Freemasonry reminds us that the journey is not about reaching a destination, but about becoming better men — one choice, one act of kindness, one moment of truth at a time.

04/06/2026

Freemasons are members of the world's oldest and largest fraternal organization.

They are bound together by shared ideals of morality, charity, and brotherly fellowship, and they utilize the tools and traditions of medieval stonemasons to teach life lessons.

A Fraternal Brotherhood: It is an organization primarily for men (though affiliated women's groups like the Order of the Eastern Star exist) focused on building strong interpersonal relationships and mutual support.

A System of Morality: The fraternity is not a religion, but it teaches ethical conduct, personal development, and moral discipline through allegorical plays and symbols.

Belief in a Higher Power: Members are required to believe in a Supreme Being (or "Grand Architect of the Universe"), but Freemasonry is open to men of all religious faiths.

Strict Neutrality: To maintain harmony, members are strictly prohibited from discussing partisan politics or specific religious doctrines during their meetings.

Rooted in Stonemasonry: The organization originated from the medieval guilds of operative stonemasons and cathedral builders. They use tools like the square and compasses as symbolic reminders of virtue and self-control.

Degree System: Members progress through three main ranks—Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, and Master Mason—which symbolize different stages of learning and moral maturity.

Community and Charity: Members heavily emphasize philanthropy, regularly raising funds for hospitals, disaster relief, and local community needs

Companion Orders: (frequently referred to as appendant bodies or concordant bodies) are independent, auxiliary organizations that extend the teachings, philosophy, and moral lessons of craft Freemasonry.

A collection of separate companion orders including Mark Master Masons, Royal Ark Mariners, Allied Masonic Degrees and the Order of the Secret Monitor.

It also includes the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite: A widely recognized order that offers a series of degrees numbered from the 4th to the 32nd (alongside the honorary 33rd degree) and the Masonic Knights Templar, which incorporates historical Christian chivalric themes.
