Happy 26th Anniversary to the Alzheimer’s Association of Trinidad and Tobago!

Today, we celebrate 26 years of service, advocacy, education, support, and hope for persons living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, their caregivers, and families throughout Trinidad and Tobago.

A was

As we celebrate, we pay special tribute to our founder, Mrs. Norma Innis, who sadly passed away last month. Mrs. Innis was a pioneer, advocate, and champion for persons living with dementia at a time when awareness and support were limited. Through her determination and unwavering commitment, she laid the foundation upon which this Association continues to grow and serve.

While we deeply miss her presence, we are comforted by the knowledge that her legacy lives on in every caregiver supported, every support group meeting held, and every life touched by the work of AzATT.

Mrs. Innis would undoubtedly have been proud to see the impact of the organization she founded 26 years ago and the continued commitment of our members, volunteers, support group leaders, and Board of Directors.

Let us use this anniversary as an opportunity to simply say, “Thank you.”

Thank you, Mrs. Norma Innis, for your vision, your leadership, and your belief that families taking care of persons living with Alzheimer’s Disease deserved support, understanding, and hope. Your work has made a lasting difference in countless lives, and for that we remain forever grateful.

May we honour your memory by continuing the mission you began and by ensuring that no person living with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia and no caregiver walks this journey alone.

Happy 26th Anniversary, AzATT.

Dr Liane Conyette-Bowen
President, AzATT

Today, we say farewell to a remarkable woman whose vision, compassion, and determination changed countless lives.

Mrs. Norma Inniss was more than the founder of the Alzheimer’s Association of Trinidad and Tobago. She was a leader, advocate, trailblazer, mentor, and a deeply caring human being who believed in standing up for others and creating meaningful change.

Through her work, she gave hope, support, education, and dignity to persons living with dementia and the families who care for them. Her legacy lives on not only in the Association she built, but in every life she touched with her wisdom, strength, and love.

As we honour her today, we remember a woman who lived fully, led courageously, and loved deeply.

Thank you, Mrs. Inniss, for your service, your vision, and your heart.
Your light will continue to guide us.

Rest peacefully. 🤍

It is with profound sadness and deeply grieving hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved founder, Mrs. Norma Inniss.

Mrs. Inniss was a remarkable woman whose life was defined by service, leadership, compassion, and unwavering dedication to others. A mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, mentor, and advocate, she touched countless lives across Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean.

Her extraordinary contributions included serving as:
• Founder of the Alzheimer’s Association of Trinidad and Tobago
• Board Member of Alzheimer’s Disease International (2005-2012)
• Honorary Member of the Caribbean Association of Pharmacists
• President of Soroptimist International
• President of the Pharmacy Board of Trinidad and Tobago

…and so much more.

She advocated fearlessly for those in need, and inspired generations through her strength, wisdom, and grace. Her vision and passion laid the foundation for the work we continue today in support of persons living with dementia, their caregivers, and families.

While our hearts are heavy with loss, we remain deeply grateful for the privilege of having known, loved, and learned from her. Her legacy will continue to live on in every life touched through the Association she so lovingly built.

We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all who mourn her passing.

Funeral arrangements will be shared in due course.

Rest peacefully, Mrs. Norma Inniss.
Your light, love, and legacy will never be forgotten. 🤍

What if protecting your brain health started with one simple afternoon of learning, connection, and community?

Dementia rates are rising across the world, and research continues to show that education, movement, social connection, mental stimulation, and healthy lifestyle habits can play an important role in supporting long-term brain wellness. Yet many people wait until there is a crisis before they begin the conversation. Brain Health Empowerment Day in Tobago is designed to change that. Whether you are caring for a loved one, concerned about healthy ageing, or simply want practical tools to stay mentally active and informed, this free community event offers a safe, uplifting space to learn and grow together.

Join us on Monday June 1 at 4:30 PM at the Scarborough Public Library for an inspiring afternoon filled with practical brain health tips, interactive activities, community connection, wellness resources, and recognition for our recent Brain Boost Boot Camp graduates. Bring a friend, parent, neighbour, or caregiver with you because strong communities are built through shared support and awareness. Together, we can help create a healthier, stronger Tobago — one conversation, one connection, and one empowered mind at a time.

Most caregivers are doing the best they can… with little training, little support, and a heart full of love.
But dementia care is different. Understanding the changes in memory, behaviour, communication, and emotional needs can make the journey less overwhelming for both caregivers and loved ones. The right knowledge can reduce stress, improve daily interactions, and help families feel more confident and prepared.

The Empowering Caregivers: Understanding Alzheimer’s & Dementia Care programme is designed to give you practical tools, real-world insight, and compassionate guidance for navigating dementia care with greater clarity and confidence. Whether you are caring for a parent, partner, relative, client, or community member, this training offers valuable support that can immediately improve the quality of care and connection.

Spaces are limited, and dementia continues to affect more Caribbean families every year. Invest in skills that truly matter. Register today and take an important step toward becoming a more informed, empowered, and compassionate caregiver.
