🎓 What Students Learned Aboard the Green Pioneer 🌱✨️

When students and migrant youth from Trinidad and Tobago stepped aboard the Green Pioneer, they were learning how the future of energy is being built.

Here’s what some of them took away from the experience:

💬 “I learnt how engineers addressed the safety challenges of ammonia fuel with sensors, gas detection systems, and automated valves.” — Adrian, 16

💬 “It proves that environmentally responsible shipping is achievable.” — Zehira-Marie, 19

💬 “Trinidad and Tobago can explore supplying green ammonia as a new economic pathway.” — Gabrielle, 21

For many of them, it was their first time seeing clean-energy technology operating at this scale, and a reminder that the next generation will play a critical role in shaping the future of energy.

⚓ Aboard the Future 🌱🚢✨️

For a group of students and migrant youth in Trinidad and Tobago, the global conversation about clean energy became real when they stepped aboard the Green Pioneer, one of the world’s first vessels powered by ammonia as a zero-carbon maritime fuel.

From exploring the ship’s engineering systems to learning how Trinidad and Tobago could play a role in the emerging green ammonia economy, the experience sparked powerful conversations about climate responsibility, innovation, and future careers.

When young people see innovation up close, the future stops feeling distant and becomes something they know they can help build.

Jeremiah - Growing Through the Power of Giving 🌱✨️

After one year in the Heroes Development Programme (HDP) at the South East Port-ofSpain Secondary School, Jeremiah says the experience has helped him see new possibilities in himself.

“Being part of the Heroes Programme has been a very positive journey for me,” he explains. “It taught me the value of communication, teamwork, and confidence, and I’ve noticed real growth in myself.”

Through the programme, delivered with support from Scotiabank and the Scotiabank Trinidad and Tobago Foundation, Jeremiah became more open to sharing his ideas, working with others, and stepping outside of his comfort zone.

One experience that stood out for him was participating in the Christmas Angels initiative, where students help bring joy to families during the holiday season.

“I felt extremely grateful to have participated in the Christmas Angels programme because it gave me the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life,” he says.

For Jeremiah, the experience was a powerful reminder of the importance of kindness and empathy.

“It helped me realise that even small acts of generosity can have a strong impact on others, especially those who may be going through difficult times.”

The experience encouraged Jeremiah to look beyond his own situation and think more about how he can support others in his community.

“Moving forward, I hope to keep building my skills, gain more discipline, and become someone who can inspire others the same way the programme has inspired me.”

For Jeremiah, the lesson is clear: helping others not only brings hope to those receiving support, but it also helps young people discover the difference they can make in the world around them.

✨️ A New Journey Begins at Chaguanas South Secondary School ✨️

A new cycle of the Heroes Development Programme (HDP) has officially begun at Chaguanas South Secondary School, delivered by The Heroes Foundation in partnership with The ANSA McAL Group.

HDP is a three-year development journey for secondary school students from Forms 1–3, designed to harness their creativity, energy, and potential to become positive change agents in their communities.

The Caribbean-centred curriculum, redesigned in 2021 with support from UNICEF, focuses on psychosocial development, 21st-century skills, sustainability education, and youth-led project-based learning.

Over the coming years, the 20 participants will move through structured development modules that help them:
✨️ understand their identity, values, and personal strengths
✨️ build emotional intelligence and healthy relationships
✨️ strengthen mental health and well-being practices
✨️ understand equality, rights, and the elimination of violence and abuse
✨️ develop personal and online safeguarding awareness
✨️ build financial literacy and digital skills
✨️ explore career pathways and the world of work
✨️ engage with energy, climate, and environmental sustainability

The kick-off ceremony also marked the signing of an MOU between The Heroes Foundation and Chaguanas South Secondary School, formalising our commitment to walk alongside these young people throughout their three-year journey.

This work depends on strong collaboration. We are grateful to the leadership and teachers of Chaguanas South Secondary School, and to the families of our participants, whose support helps create the environment where young people can grow, reflect, and thrive.

We’re especially grateful to ANSA McAL for their investment in the future of Trinidad and Tobago.

Together, we look forward to supporting this cohort as they develop the skills, values, and confidence to become 21st-century leaders and changemakers.

Because developing young people takes more than a programme. It takes a village. 🇹🇹✨️

💙❤️✨️ Year One Complete at Marabella South Secondary School ✨️❤️💙

Twenty students. One year. New confidence, new perspectives, and new possibilities.

Last year, students from Marabella South Secondary School began their three-year journey in the Heroes Development Programme, supported by The ANSA McAL Group.

Year One focused on personal development, and helping students find their voice, build confidence, and expand their sense of what is possible for their future.

Through the Self-Awareness and Emotional Awareness modules, students explored identity, communication, empathy, and decision-making, learning how to better understand themselves and engage with the world around them.

The growth was both measurable and meaningful:

📈 90% demonstrated clear learning gains in the modules, despite many entering with limited understanding of the concepts.

💬 Students reported strong personal growth, including improvements in communication, emotional management, confidence, and their ability to set and pursue goals.

📊 By the end of the year, participants were actively applying these skills in areas such as academic motivation, leadership development, emotional well-being, and social relationships, with no students remaining in the low competency category.

🧠 The cohort also recorded an Average–High Emotional Intelligence profile, reflecting healthy peer relationships and positive emotional development.

The Heroes Development Programme is a three-year journey that helps young people grow not only in who they are, but in what they believe they can become, connecting personal development with leadership, opportunity, and future pathways.

This work is strengthened by the collaboration of the school leadership, teachers, and parents, whose support helps reinforce the values, confidence, and growth students are building through the programme.

Because it truly takes a village to transform lives and forge a brighter future 🌱✨

✨️❤️ Building 21st Century Leaders in South East Port-of-Spain ❤️✨️

We’re proud to celebrate a new cycle of the Heroes Development Programme (HDP) at the South East Port of Spain Secondary School, in partnership with Scotiabank and the Scotiabank Foundation.

Over the past year, our young Heroes have been engaged in structured, long-term development designed to strengthen self-awareness, emotional regulation, communication, critical thinking, and l leadership capacity.

They are learning that resilience is not avoidance, but navigation. It is setting a vision for their future, adapting when circumstances shift, asking for support when needed, and continuing forward despite real challenges.

They have increased their confidence in public speaking and communication, and strengthened their teamwork, organisation, and problem-solving skills by planning and implementing school-wide initiatives to support families in need within their community.

And that’s just the beginning. This year, they have turned their focus inward, towards tackling in-school bullying and violence, and implementing peer-led initiatives that promote mental health and wellbeing.

For them, ensuring that each child feels heard, respected, and supported is the foundation for overcoming any challenge, and we’re excited to see the impact their leadership will continue to create.

The continued partnership of Scotiabank and the Scotiabank Foundation is preventionfocused development in action. It is cross-sector collaboration working to build 21st century leaders by design, not by chance.

Together, we are transforming lives in South East Port-of-Spain ✨️❤️
Together, we are forging a brighter future in Trinidad and Tobago ❤️🤍🖤🇹🇹✨️

Congratulations to Gabrielle Jacob, and thank you for representing the Heroes Foundation so proudly and powerfully at the National Youth Parliament 2025.

As Minister of the People, Social Development, and Family Services, Gabrielle argued for a thoughtful, people-centred approach to tackling cyberbullying that goes beyond just reaction and punishment. She highlighted the need to address the root causes of online harm, support parents in navigating digital-age challenges, and create environments where children feel safe, heard, and comfortable speaking about their experiences.

Gabrielle underscored the importance of building digital literacy, digital citizenship, and ethical online behaviour among young people. She also reinforced the urgency of gender-sensitive approaches, as young women and girls face disproportionately high levels of online harassment.

In her contribution, she emphasised the importance of partnership and collaboration, referencing the positive impact of national initiatives that bring together public-sector agencies, private-sector partners, NGOs, and multilateral organisations to empower young people with the knowledge, skills, and leadership tools to promote digital safety and wellbeing in their schools and communities.

Her thoughtful delivery reflected the kind of empathetic, data-driven, and forward-thinking leadership we are proud to see in our young heroes.

Thank you to the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago for creating opportunities that help young leaders learn, contribute, and shine, and congratulations to everyone involved in making National Youth Parliament 2025 a meaningful and inspiring experience ✨️🇹🇹✨️
