This NPOS was operational in Tobago from 2018 but formally registed in 2020 as a civil society organization responsible for the preservation of Tobago's archaelogical and historical built assets. I will be very glad to show you our old and present maps of the island of Tobago. In a few days, with the hopefully lifting of Covid restrictions, we will be able to reopen our exhibit which can be viewed

at our location on the same compound where La Tartaruga Italian Restaurant is located, opposite the Buccoo Integrated Facility.

What do you think this machine was used for?

Hidden among Tobago's landscapes are relics of an industry that once shaped the island's economy, communities, and way of life. Long before tourism became one of Tobago's major industries, sugar plantations dominated the island, leaving behind fascinating stories, historic estates, and machinery like the one pictured here.

But what exactly was this machine used for? How did it contribute to the sugar-making process? And what role did sugar play in Tobago's history?

Join us this Sunday for an insightful journey into the past at **The History of Sugar in Tobago**, where you'll uncover the answers and gain a deeper appreciation for the island's rich heritage.

📅Sunday 21 June

The remnant of the Sugar Works Mount Irvine Estate, Parish St. Patrick's, Tobago are still visible while visiting the Mt.Irvine Bay Resort together with the Mill Walls converted to a restaurant in modern times.

In 1766 the Estate comprised 500 acres: at the time the wind mill was an octagonal structure much smaller in size compared to the wind mill present on the grounds of the Mt.Irvine Resort which was constructed at a later period.

Details are available at the Museum Buccoo, Whatsapp 7155465.

The ruins of the Sugar Works Les Coteaux Estate, Parish St.David’s, Tobago, are visible while crossing the bridge across the Courland River.

The source of power for the mill was provided by a waterwheel.
None of the parts, mechanism, hardware are present in situ after being removed to be traded as scrap iron.

Did you know that Latvia has a historical connection with Tobago? 🤔 We were recently reminded of this unique connection by some interesting visitors who came to the House of Languages from this Caribbean island. 🇹🇹

Our two wonderful guests are working on the creation of a new museum in Tobago and are travelling the world collecting materials, stories, and historical evidence related to the island’s past. Their research journey has also brought them here to Latvia, as Tobago was connected to the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia in the 17th century, which established a colony on the island.

We were delighted to welcome them to the House of Languages and share some insights about this unique chapter of history. 🌍📚
