The young men mastering literacy with ALTA
๐๐๐ฏ๐ข๐
More than five months ago I decided today is the day to join ALTA. I still remember the first time I found out about ALTA. I was now entering Form 5 and my mom and I were talking about lessons.
I wanted to join lessons, but I was always concerned and thinking about the spelling problem I had. Then one day I was talking to her over the phone and she told me about her discovery of the ALTA classes. She asked me if I would be interested in it and I was.
On that first day at ALTA class I entered with a preconceived notion that it was only for persons with heavy literacy problems, but my opinion soon changed. I was also a little nervous because I did not know what to expect, but after a few minutes the feeling faded. The tutors were very calm and loving and they made me feel at ease.
Since that day I have been consistent with the ALTA class. Being in ALTA helped me so much with my writing, reading, spelling and improved my confidence too. Since joining, my grades got better and Iโm heading into CXC better than I would have.

I had a strange feeling inside me the first time I went to sign up for ALTA. It was a mix of nervousness and hope, something inside me was saying this is an important step in my life, so I made the decision to go at the school where I heard ALTA was taking place.
The security at the school said to go to the library, the library assistant said there is no ALTA here. I felt emotionally exhausted, two noโs in under three minutes. I didn't want to make a third try.
About eight years later I started to follow the ALTA page looking for new classes, new updates and any information I could find about ALTA.
In August 2025, I made an attempt at the Community Centre where the experience was much better than the last time. The security officer told me to come back in September when the class started back so I did.
Showing up to my first ALTA class, I remember feeling unsure, but also proud of myself for taking action towards my first little step to get a lot tomorrow.
I felt a little uncomfortable but also happy. As the days went by, I began to notice small changes. Five months later I could see that those small efforts were adding up. Every day I continued to grow little by little through practice and coming early to class. The little I was doing turned into a lot.
Thanks to ALTA now I can talk with more confidence and be better at understanding. I can plan my days and set small goals for myself instead of feeling overwhelmed. I am more motivated. As every tomorrow rolls into a new day, I now remind myself that progress starts with small steps. There are many tomorrows to come in my life. When I look ahead to my tomorrows, I see a future where I am confident, skilled and always improving.
To get "A LOT TOMORROW" I will continue adding little things to my today such as practicing my phonic sounds, revising my cards and following a simple day-to-day plan. By doing this I believe I am becoming the best version of myself one day at a time.
