Today, the Banking, Insurance and General Workers’ Union joins the nation in celebrating 64 years of Independence.

As we honour this important chapter in our national journey, we recognise the generations of workers whose labour, sacrifice and determination have helped to build Trinidad and Tobago.

Independence is a celebration of our sovereignty and a continuing call to build a fairer and more inclusive nation. A Nation where every worker is respected, every voice is valued, and everyone has the opportunity to live and labour with dignity.

**5,900 JOBS LOST: GOVERNMENT MUST ACT TO PROTECT EMPLOYMENT**

BIGWU President Cde Don Devenish has described the reported loss of 5,900 jobs between the final quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026 as a wake-up call for the Government.

With many former CEPEP and URP workers still unemployed and uncertainty now surrounding the future of Hilton Trinidad and its workforce, Cde Devenish has called for urgent action and the development of a comprehensive national employment strategy.

He also urged the Government to provide a clear and unequivocal assurance that the employment of Hilton workers will be protected while negotiations continue towards a new lease arrangement.

BIGWU maintains that trade unions must independently assess government policies and speak out whenever workers and their livelihoods are threatened—regardless of their relationship with the Government of the day.

Protecting decent and sustainable employment must remain a national priority.

Trade union leaders are criticising what they describe as the silence of some labour organisations following reports of nearly 6,000 job losses in the first quarter of 2026. They are also calling on the Government to provide assurances to workers amid uncertainty over the future of Hilton Trinidad.
The latest Central Statistical Office (CSO) Labour Force Survey showed employment declined by 5,900 between the fourth quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026.

🚨 WORKS CREDIT UNION STRIKE UPDATE 🚨

Workers of Works Credit Union once again gathered yesterday outside the Society’s Head Office on Dundonald Street, Port of Spain, continuing their call for a fair and reasonable wage increase.

The workers have repeatedly cited that the Society's 7% offer for 2023-2025 does not adequately reflect the rising cost of living, the value of their labour or their continued contribution to the success of the Society.

Yesterday, BIGWU Labour Relations Officer Cde Hayden Hernandez was invited to meet with the Credit Union to discuss the impasse and bring a resolution to the outstanding negotiations. In this interview with NWUs Rae Samuel, before this meeting, he shares his thoughts and concerns ahead of the 1:30 pm meeting.

🚨 STRIKE ALERT — DAY 5 🚨
Works Credit Union Workers Remain Strong! ✊🏽

As workers continued their protest outside the Society’s Head Office on Dundonald Street, Port of Spain, the picket line received a very special show of support.

Mr. Jemmot Alexander put on his red jersey and joined the protest alongside his daughter, Esther Alexander-Gittens, standing in solidarity with her and her colleagues in their fight for fair wages and better treatment.

What makes the gesture even more meaningful is that today marks Mr. Alexander’s 72nd birthday! Rather than spending the day on the sidelines, he chose to stand shoulder to shoulder with the workers and add his voice to their call for justice.

Happy 72nd birthday, Mr. Alexander! BIGWU salutes you for demonstrating that solidarity has no age limit and that the struggle of one worker is the struggle of us all.

Some Union branches nearby have already joined in to lend solidarity as this will pave a path for fair treatment and improved conditions for all! ✊🏽
