Caribbean Natural Resources Institute Innovating for equity, resilience and sustainability

CANARI's core belief is that a wide range of stakeholders can play an effective role in managing the natural resources of the Caribbean, once avenues for equitable participation can be established.

๐ŸŒ CANARI was thrilled to be part of the Strengthening Evidence on Outcomes for Locally Led Adaptation Symposium, held June 3โ€“4, 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand!

The symposium brought together knowledge holders and researchers from across the globe, especially the Global South, to explore what counts as evidence, who it serves, and how to better channel it into decisions and financing for locally led climate adaptation.

Our Resilience Programme Manager, Dr. Ainka Granderson, presented CANARI's work mapping civil society-led or co-led climate action initiatives across the Caribbean (2016โ€“2025), and analysing trends, outcomes, and finance flows.

These insights will feed into a flagship report on locally led adaptation and shape a research agenda for the next 5โ€“10 years.

This initiative is led by Stockholm Environment Institute alongside nine partners, including CANARI, with support from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Webinar series alert: Towards climate justice in the Caribbean is back next Wednesday!

Session 4, "Rural communities and natural resource users' lived experiences of climate injustice," is T-7 days away.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Wednesday, 17 June | ๐Ÿ•’ 3:00 PM (AST) | ๐Ÿ’ป Virtual

Across the Caribbean, farmers, fishers, and rural communities are on the frontlines of climate change and yet they are too often left out of the conversations and decisions that shape their futures.

Join CANARI for a powerful session on the lived realities of climate injustice in rural and coastal communities. We'll hear directly from community voices and explore how inequities in access to resources, finance, ecosystems, and decision-making deepen vulnerability and shape resilience.

This is a space for listening, learning, and connecting across the Caribbean climate justice community. Everyone is welcome.

The "Towards climate justice in the Caribbeanโ€ webinar series is being held with financial support from CANARIโ€™s anchor partner, Open Society Foundations (OSF), in addition to the Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF) and Panta Rhea Foundation.

The ocean connects us all. Yet across the world, coastal communities face different challengesโ€”and are developing innovative solutions to protect marine ecosystems while building sustainable livelihoods.
Today, on World Ocean Day, we celebrate the inspiring work being carried out through the Blue Tourism Initiative across three marine regions:

๐Ÿ”น Mediterranean Sea
From Al Hoceima to Djerba and the Lebanese coast, local partners are working to protect coastal ecosystems and enhance visitor experiences through sustainable tourism practices.

๐Ÿ”น Western Indian Ocean
Communities, tourism stakeholders and conservation actors are collaborating to strengthen sustainable tourism standards, support local livelihoods and build resilience for the future.

๐Ÿ”น Caribbean Sea
From mangrove ecosystems to coastal villages, local initiatives are demonstrating how tourism can contribute to nature conservation, community well-being and economic opportunity.
Across these regions, a common vision unites our efforts: healthy oceans, thriving communities and tourism that works for both people and nature.
As we mark World Ocean Day, we celebrate the partnerships, knowledge exchange and local leadership driving positive change across the , and Western Indian Ocean ( ).
๐Ÿ‘‰ Swipe through to discover how communities across these three marine regions are shaping a more sustainable blue future.

Happy World Environment Day 2026! ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒŽ

This year, we are reflecting on climate action.

Climate change affects more than the environment. It impacts our health, livelihoods, economies and communities.

Across the Caribbean, people are already experiencing these effects. That's why climate justice and equitable solutions matter.

At CANARI, we have partnered with vested donors, community organisations, research institutes, government and intergovernmental agencies and the private sector to:
* facilitate dialogue on climate justice;
* support the Caribbean Climate Justice Alliance (CCJA); and
* advocate for the implementation of the Escazรบ Agreement.

This World Environment Day, join us in supporting climate action and climate justice in the Caribbean and beyond.

It's time to act : World Environment Day

Up next in our webinar series!
Women and LGBTQ+ Persons: Lived Experiences of Climate Injustice

Climate change doesn't create inequality โ€” but it often makes existing inequalities worse.
For many women and LGBTQ+ persons in the Caribbean, climate impacts are layered on top of challenges already being experienced - affecting livelihoods, access to resources, safety, housing and participation in decision-making.

Join us for a conversation that brings these lived experiences out of the margins and into the centre of climate action.
