Eating a dietary pattern based on whole plant foods is a clinically supported approach to preventing, managing and even reversing many of the chronic diseases burdening our healthcare system.

Doctors for Nutrition is an independent health-promotion charity, focused on equipping healthcare professionals with the tools to confidently prescribe diet and lifestyle change.

Because when people understand the ‘why’ and feel supported with the ‘how’, optimal health becomes achievable.

Our next FREE Six Pillars webinar will provide GPs, and anyone at risk of developing bowel cancer, with vital information on how an eating pattern focused on whole plant foods and other lifestyle interventions can reduce their risk of developing the disease.

Bowel cancer is Australia's fourth most common and second deadliest cancer, while New Zealand has one of the highest bowel cancer rates in the world, where it is the third most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death. Worryingly, early-onset bowel cancer has risen by around 266% since the 1980s, with people under 50 now accounting for about 1 in 10 cases. It is also the leading cause of cancer death among Australians aged 25–54 and New Zealanders under 50.

Diet significantly influences bowel cancer risk. High intake of processed/red meat, fast food, and refined carbohydrates increases risk, particularly for early-onset colorectal cancer. Conversely, fibre-rich whole plant foods reduce colorectal cancer risk by up to 40%.

Nutrition remains under-taught in medical education. Barriers to nutrition counselling in general practice include lack of time, confidence, and knowledge. GPs require enhanced education on nutrition's role in bowel cancer prevention and practical strategies for time-limited consultations.

Robust evidence supports plant‑rich dietary patterns—rich in fibre from whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables—for bowel cancer prevention.
Following the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to have their questions answered live.

Human physiology is brilliantly adapted to plant iron, and non-haem iron may actually offer protective health benefits.

One of the most persistent nutrition myths is that plant-rich eating leads to poor iron status.

In reality, total iron intake is rarely the issue–plant foods happen to be abundant in this vital mineral.

There are two forms of dietary iron: haem iron 🥩 and non-haem iron 🌱

Because the body cannot easily excrete excess iron, absorbing too much haem iron can be harmful over time.

The body can tightly regulate the absorption of non-haem iron from plants, which prevents iron overload and protects against chronic disease risk.

Understanding the science behind iron absorption empowers you to make confident nutrition choices without unnecessary stress.

A new (2026) systematic review and meta-analysis published in Nutrition Reviews has found that the quality of plant-based foods matters when it comes to breast cancer risk. 🔬📊

The findings showed:
🥦 Women with the highest adherence to a healthful plant-based diet had up to a 39% lower risk of breast cancer.
🍩 Women with the highest adherence to an unhealthful plant-based diet, characterised by foods such as refined grains, sweets and sugar-sweetened beverages, had a higher risk of breast cancer.

The protective effects were seen when plant-based diets emphasised whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and nuts.

The authors concluded that dietary guidance for breast cancer prevention should encourage replacing animal foods and less healthful plant foods with nutrient-rich whole plant foods.

👉 Learn more about the role of nutrition in preventing a diagnosis or the recurrence of breast cancer in our webinar presented by Surgical Breast Oncology Specialist, Dr Kristi Funk.
