NASA runs the largest hackathon on Earth and it costs nothing to enter.

The Space Apps Challenge is two days — 14 and 15 November — running at the same time in hundreds of cities and online. You use NASA's real open data to solve real problems written by NASA scientists. Space exploration, Earth science, agriculture, astrophysics, even storytelling.

There is no entry barrier, and that is not marketing:

No minimum age. NASA states this explicitly.
No experience needed. No coding background required.
Open to every country, Türkiye included.
You can do the whole thing online, from home.

NASA's own guidance says that if anyone asks you to pay for any part of Space Apps, do not pay, and report it.

Everyone who submits a project gets a NASA certificate. Global finalists are announced in December.

Three dates: registration opens 26 August. Challenges published and team formation, 17 September. The hackathon, 14 and 15 November.

You do not need permission. No school enters you, no teacher signs anything. You register yourself, pick a challenge, and build something.

Nobody's thinking about paperwork on the day they find out.

That's the problem. Results land this week, and registration runs 24–28 August — e-Devlet closes on the 26th. Being placed isn't the same as being enrolled, and every year that gap costs people the place they just won.

Physical AI is where artificial intelligence stops living on a screen and starts controlling something that moves — aircraft, satellites, autonomous systems, defence platforms. It is one of the fastest-growing engineering fields in the world, and one of the very few where Türkiye is building at the front.

Why this one matters:

— Aerospace, aviation and defence: the sectors Türkiye is investing in hardest

Stanford has a word for what it is looking for. Most applicants have never heard it.

Intellectual vitality.

Stanford says it looks for a genuine love of learning — students who pursue a subject because they cannot leave it alone, not because it was assigned or because it looks good on a form. It is the difference between a student who takes the course and a student who could not stop reading about it afterwards.

How to actually show it:

Follow one question too far. Pick something your syllabus raised and never answered, then chase it for a month. Write down what you found and what you got wrong.
Learn something nobody asked you to. Stanford publishes free lectures through its Open Learning channel and free courses on edX and Coursera. Finish one and build something with it.
Show the trail, not the trophy. Admissions want the reading list, the failed attempt, the changed mind. A certificate proves attendance. A project proves obsession.
