So…
After Turkey (back in the middle of July) we crossed into Georgia. We spent one night Camping in the centre of the country and then headed straight to Tbilisi to catch our flight.

The land border to Azerbaijan is closed so we could not complete our plan of driving all the way to Central Asia, in retrospect this was a god send because the heat would have killed us..

Hello all, Today is a big day and a serious landmark in our journey.

Our second leg began with our journey to Turkey and took exactly a week, through: France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Bulgaria - where picked up a new companion - and finally to Istanbul where we met some loved ones and have spent the last 9 days.

We are currently crossing the Bosphorus, from Europe, into Asia and this serves the perfect point to reflect on the distance we’ve covered and why we’re doing this in the first place.

Along with Meurig, Flower, Alfie and Ben we have been carrying a small part of Suanu with us for our whole journey. We always dreamed of traveling the world with him and experiencing so many new memories and it has touched our hearts that Olivia and Felix were kind enough to allow us to bring a small part of him with us so that we can still fulfill this dream.

The work CRY does to provide ECG screening and bereavement support to victims of young sudden cardiac arrest is invaluable and we are immensely proud to be undertaking this journey to support them.

Please Donate if you can, the link is in our bio and the money goes straight to . We still have over 1000 miles between us and our next landmark - Tiblisi, Georgia. We’ll send you updates from Cappadocia as recommended by .com_ ✌🏼

20,000 meals across Eurasia.

Armed with: a gas stove; 1.5l, 2l and 3l pots; a non stick frying pan; a kettle and a steamer. We have been cooking our dinner (almost) everyday so far.

For breakfast, we lean on granola (if we’re lucky, with a spoonful of peanut butter), for speed and ease. If we feeling like treating ourselves, we opt for scrambled eggs, toast and of course a nice cuppa.

For lunch, sandwiches. If we are on the move, on foot or on wheels, we don’t want to expend more time than we need to fuel ourselves. If we are stationary, these sandwiches become toasties.

For dinner, one pot wonders. While this isn’t always true when we have Alfie’s special frittata, sausages and mash and Ben’s risotto - we find that it’s easiest to eat: Ratatouille, Dahl, stews, coq au van , and Meurig’s fajitas. We try to vary the carbs: polenta, cous cous, rice, mash potatoes and bulgar wheat. This is where our gas cooker comes in handy, often helped by some frontiers style camp fire cooking, and our steamer, which sorts out the veg.

To drink, well… Beer of course!

Episode 2: Emerge from the Nebulous Zone.

While we were in Hungary we discovered that we had some trouble with our paperwork. After a few days on the phone to the insurance company it became clear that we had to temporarily return home. Those of you who guess 5-10 countries, you were right…

As we needed more obstacles, just outside Frankfurt we stopped and noticed smoke billowing out of the van. Some diagnostics from Alfie drew a hairline fracture in a fuel injector to our attention. Thankfully we were able to head to a campsite on the outskirts of town, there are certainly worse places to break down.

The next day we got in touch with our friends , the best in class stockist for VW camper parts. Kindly they sorted us a replacement and it was now a waiting game until the part arrived. Once this arrived we successfully replaced it ourselves and headed straight for Calais.

We used this time in Blighty to: fit shelves, make other improvements, and use our experience from the first 6 weeks to reflect on what kit we brought and didn’t need as well as what we left, but missed, and we are happy to report that we are back on course, as eager as ever and a little wiser than we were before.

We must also thank for all the guidance and help along the way!

Day 20: How we spend our evenings

Backgammon, Chess and Perudo have featured heavily. Throw in some reading, Dostoyevsky, Dickens and Pratchett and we almost seem civilised.

Except we are nomads, we are on the run. Our beards are patchy and Ben is down a tooth.

Big thank you to our biggest supporter for everything.

Day 1. Our drive for begins.

We were waived off from Suanu’s house, channel hopped and drove to Bruge, Belgium which is, in two words, clean and quaint. Morale is high. Fontainebleau is next.

We are leaving tomorrow. These are the contents of our van.

Hello all, we are living in changing and odd times. The invasion of Ukraine by Russia has left us having open conversations about our journey, safety, and what we can achieve.

We have resolved, firstly, that we have no intention of travelling into Russia. Not only would it be inappropriate but also practically impossible. Suanu loved to push boundaries but it’s safe to say that the Russian border is a boundary he wouldn’t have wanted us to push.

Secondly, as the situation in Europe changes, our plan may have to adapt. While it is worth noting that our main intention is to drive as far as we can; to give you an example we are considering options that allow us to leave the van in a lock up in Europe and continue to Central Asia by plane. We would rather not do this but we believe it is wise to play by ear whether travelling through areas such as Romania, Turkey, and Georgia is sensible given Russian pressure and the humanitarian consequences of Refugees.

Of course, the focus on completing our gruelling personal challenges has not changed. We hope to leave by the end of the month and will keep you updated. We have delayed our start date to complete maintenance on the van and plan for the worst so that we can do Suanu and proud.

Above all our hearts are with Ukraine at this time and hope the situation improves as quickly as possible.
