Dignity is not imposed by force, but restored by freedom
For years, the Assad regime and its Russian allies have tried to promote return conferences, calling on Syrians to return to the " bosom of the homeland."
But the truth was clear: no one returned.
When Assad fell, and the Russians and Iranians withdrew, Syrians returned home on their own. This is the truth that we, at the Syrian Association for Citizens' Dignity, have worked to confirm for eight years. Return is not just a political decision, but a natural right that can only be achieved in a safe environment, with real freedom and preserved dignity, far from oppression and fear.
We believe that any return of Syrians to their homeland must be safe, voluntary, and dignified, because dignity is not imposed by force, but is restored with freedom and justice.

Why Normalizing Relations with Assad Would Be Disastrous for Syrian Refugees and the EU?

In July, eight EU countries—Italy, Austria, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czechia, Cyprus, and Greece—proposed shifting the EU's Syria strategy towards normalizing relations with the Assad regime. Their rationale focuses on difficult questions: How can we offer Syrians economic opportunities to prevent dangerous migration to Europe? How can we create conditions for their return?

The Syrian Association for Citizens' Dignity (SACD) has issued a response to EU member states, warning that normalization with Assad is a grave mistake.

The notion of normalizing ties with Assad is not only misguided but poses severe risks to the safe return of refugees and the political process. SACD’s six years of consultations with displaced Syrians consistently demonstrate that normalization would reinforce Assad's regime, deepen the humanitarian crisis, and further obstruct the possibility of refugee return.
