🔵⚪Former Minister for Food, Agriculture and Livestock of Türkiye, Dr. Mehmet Mehdi Eker, paid a visit to UCLG-MEWA. The spontaneous meeting came following the UCLG-MEWA Forum on Innovation and Food Systems held in Selçuklu – Konya, on July 28-29. Where Dr. Eker was the guest of honor and keynote speaker at the official opening.
We were pleased to welcome Mr. Eker and thank him for his valuable visit and exchange.

🔵⚪قام معالي الدكتور محمد مهدي إكر، وزير الغذاء والزراعة والثروة الحيوانية الأسبق في الجمهورية التركية، بزيارة إلى منظمة المدن المتحدة والإدارات المحلية فرع الشرق الأوسط وغرب آسيا.

وجاء هذا اللقاء الودي عقب انعقاد منتدى UCLG-MEWA للابتكار والأنظمة الغذائية، الذي استضافته بلدية سلجوقلو في قونية يومي 28 و29 يوليو/تموز، حيث شارك الدكتور إكر كضيف شرف ومتحدث رئيسي في الافتتاح الرسمي للمنتدى.

يسرّنا أن نرحب بالدكتور إكر في UCLG-MEWA، ونتقدم إليه بجزيل الشكر على زيارته الكريمة وتبادل الآراء القيّم.

🔵⚪Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Eski Gıda, Tarım ve Hayvancılık Bakanı Dr. Mehmet Mehdi Eker, UCLG-MEWA’ya ziyarette bulundu.

Bu samimi buluşma, 28-29 Temmuz tarihlerinde Selçuklu Belediyesi ev sahipliğinde Konya’da gerçekleştirilen UCLG-MEWA Yenilikçilik ve Gıda Sistemleri Forumu’nun ardından gerçekleşti. Dr. Eker, Forumun resmi açılışında onur konuğu ve açılış konuşmacısı olarak yer almıştı.

Dr. Eker’i UCLG-MEWA’da ağırlamaktan memnuniyet duyuyor, nazik ziyareti ve değerli görüş alışverişi için kendisine teşekkür ediyoruz.

A productive discussion was held on institutional cooperation, potential areas for joint work, zero waste initiatives, and the COP31 process. We sincerely thank Mr. Ağırbaş for his kind visit.

📘 ❄️ Explore the Opinion piece, "Green Circular Economy through a Plant-Waste–Based Snow-Removal Formulation" from Tehran published in MEWA Agora Issue 51..

Drawing on the innovative experience of Tehran Municipality, the article highlights how cities can tackle harsh winter weather by reimagining urban green waste, such as tree and shrub prunings, as a valuable resource for eco-friendly snow and ice management.

By replacing traditional, corrosive sand and salt applications with bio-based formulations, cities can protect urban vegetation, prevent soil and water pollution, and shield road infrastructure from severe damage, offering a sustainable, circular-economy model for municipalities everywhere.

Tahran Belediyesi’nin yenilikçi uygulamasından yola çıkan yazı; kentlerin ağaç ve çalı budama atıklarını çevre dostu bir kar ve buzla mücadele kaynağına dönüştürerek zorlu kış koşullarıyla nasıl başa çıkabileceğini gözler önüne seriyor.

🌍 As part of the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification ( ) in Ulaanbaatar, UCLG-MEWA participated in the session “Local Government Strategies to Address Climate Change Risks.”

The session brought together:

🔹 Assoc. Prof. Dr. Serdar Koyuncu, Head of the Climate Change and Zero Waste Department at Konya Metropolitan Municipality.

🔹 Sinan Sineoğlu, General Manager of Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Water and Sewerage Administration

🔹 Şenol Kul, Mayor of Terme Municipality

🔹 Yehia Ibrahim, General Coordinator of UCLG-MEWA

✨The speakers shared local experiences and strategies addressing drought, water security, land degradation, flood and landslide risks, climate-resilient infrastructure, and sustainable land management.

⚪️The discussions underlined the importance of integrating scientific data and national decision-support mechanisms into local planning, infrastructure, investment, and climate policies. They also highlighted the vital role of cooperation among local governments, national institutions, city networks, and international partners in transforming shared challenges into coordinated and locally grounded solutions.

🔵Building climate-resilient and sustainable cities requires the integrated management of water, land, natural ecosystems, and urban development—supported by stronger international cooperation and the meaningful participation of local governments in global climate and environmental agendas.

🤝🌎On 19 August, we commemorate World Humanitarian Day by remembering those affected by humanitarian crises and honoring the dedication of humanitarian workers who continue to provide vital assistance under the most difficult and dangerous conditions. Local governments stand at the forefront of every humanitarian crisis, as the first authorities to respond and deliver support and relief. The establishment of strong local governments, equipped with adequate resources and capacities, remains essential to safeguarding the welfare of communities impacted by such emergencies.

The 2026 campaign underscores the urgent need to protect civilians, humanitarian workers, and health personnel, to ensure safe and unhindered humanitarian access, and to demand greater accountability for violations of international law. As the campaign reminds us: “The time for concern is over. The time for consequence is now.”



نُحيي في 19 آب/أغسطس اليوم العالمي للعمل الإنساني، مستذكرين المتضررين من الأزمات الإنسانية، ومكرّمين تفاني العاملين في المجال الإنساني الذين يواصلون تقديم المساعدات الحيوية في أصعب الظروف وأكثرها خطورة.

📍 Road to Antalya | Developing Climate-Resilient Cities 🏙️🍃

As UCLG-MEWA, we were pleased to participate in the “Developing Climate-Resilient Cities on the Road to COP31: From Resource Efficiency to Urban Resilience” event, jointly organised by ILBANK and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Ankara .

In the scope of the event, we had the opportunity to meet with Eyyüp Karahan, Director General of ILBANK, and exchange views on climate-resilient cities, sustainable urban infrastructure and innovative financing solutions.

Dr. Yousef Al-Shawarbeh, as he concludes his remarkable term of more than 9 years as Mayor of Amman.

As UCLG MEWA Co-President, and UCLG Vice President, he has greatly strengthened the voice of local and regional governments at both regional and global levels.

His legacy of service to Amman and his invaluable contributions to the local government movement will remain a source of inspiration for our network.

We wish him continued success, good health, and fulfillment in the new chapter ahead, and look forward to sustaining our close partnership in the years to come.

’nde bir kez daha yerel yönetimlerin karar mekanizmalarında gençlerin aktif yer alması lüks değil, sürdürülebilir kalkınmanın temel şartı olduğunun altını çiziyoruz .

Farklı kentlerin, farklı coğrafyaların kendilerine özgü ihtiyaçları ve zorlukları olabilir. Ancak bu yerel gerçeklikler bizleri ayrıştırmak yerine, küresel ölçekteki dayanışmamızı daha da köklü ve güçlü kılmalıdır. Gençlerin yereldeki dinamizmi, küresel hedeflerimize ulaşmamızdaki en büyük köprüdür.
